Dumont Sand Dunes are located approximately 30 miles north of Baker, CA. The elevation at Dumont ranges from about 700 feet at the river crossing to 1200 feet on the top of Comp Hill. There is approx 8,150 acres of open area. From one end to the other Dumont is about 3-4 miles long and about 1.3 miles wide. The types of dunes range from small rollers to large razorbacks and bowls. Many of the hills are very large and steep. There are two areas of dunes at Dumont, "Little Dumont" (located along HWY127) and then the main area of dunes where most of the duners often go. Approximately a mile north of "Little Dumont" on HWY127 there is a gravel road (Dumont Dunes Road) which brings you to the main area of Dumont Dunes.

  • All vehicles must have a muffler or spark arrester and have either a street-legal license or be registered as an off-highway vehicle.
  • If you are not a resident of California and your OHV is not registered in your home state, you are required to have a California "Nonresident" OHV permit to legally operate your vehicle.
  • All OHVs must have a mast and red or orange flag for visibility in the dunes.
  • Vehicles operated at night must use both headlights and taillights.
  • Helmets are required to be worn by all riders of ATVs.
  • Only one person at a time is allowed on an ATV.
  • Possession or use of any glass container, empty or not, used for carrying any liquid for drinking purposes is prohibited (43 CFR 8361.1-6).
  • Camping is allowed anywhere within the riding area as long as it does not block travel on a road, and is limited to a 14-day stay. 
  • Shooting is not permitted within this area.
  • Draining of sewage tanks, littering, or dumping of trash is prohibited.
  • Do not burn pallets or wood with nails!

The main camping area consists of a huge flat area. The sand can get pretty soft the closer to the dunes you get so be careful not to get stuck. There are no facilities at Dumont other than pit toilet restrooms. There is no running water.

You must bring everything there that you need for your trip. The closest store, motels, gas stations, etc are in either Baker, Ca (approx 30 miles) or Pahrump, NV (which is approx 50 miles). There are no dumpsters at Dumont. The motto is "Pack it in, Pack it out!" There are no campsites to reserve, no water or sewer hookups, dump stations, etc. at Dumont Dunes.

 
COME PREPARED!
*There are dump stations in Baker and Pahrump.

*Please do NOT use the dumpsters to dispose of your trash in the nearby town of Tecopa. 
Those dumpsters can get filled very quickly and are strictly for Tecopa residents ONLY.
 
*Keep our dunes clean. Even if it's not yours, please haul away any trash left behind by others and make sure trash bags are secure in the beds of pickups.




All fees are used to support activities and projects at Dumont Dunes

New Dumont Fee Schedule

  • $30 for a weekly pass for any non-holiday week
  • $40 for a weekly pass that includes a holiday
  • $90 for a season pass with holiday black-out dates
  • $120 for a season pass that includes holidays

    Holiday weekends are Halloween, Thanksgiving, New Years, Presidents Day and MLK weekend.

 

Special permits are required for certain activities at Dumont.

Those activities include:

  • Commercial Filming/ Photography - including feature films, television series and commercials, as well as magazine ads and features. Many students do photography projects that require permission to use the lands to ensure that there is not a scheduling conflict

  • Competitive Events - including car and motorcycle racing and riding events.

  • Product Testing - this includes launching drone aircraft, off-road testing of vehicles and other equipment.

  • Musical Events - including concerts and bands.

  • Vending - including the sale of food and products at competitive events or otherwise on BLM-managed land.

 Filming and race events are two differently organized activities.

You will be referred to the proper BLM person based on the activity and area that you plan to use.

Take HWY 127 north approx. 34 miles. You'll pass "Little Dumont" on the right hand side. Just past Little Dumont you'll see a sign for Dumont Dunes pointing to the right. Turn on Dumont Dunes Rd (gravel road). Proceed approx 3-4 miles, crossing the Amargosa River Crossing (cement slab), and pull up to the pay station. Once you past the pay station, stay on the gravel road as it brings you uphill to the top of the  plateau.

Who are they and what do they do?


DDR/ Dumont Dune Riders: The duners themselves of the Dumont Dunes community who share the common interest of duning and having a good time in a safe, friendly and responsible manner with respect for each other. Dumont Dune Riders strongly support FoDD, the TRT, and the BLM and all law enforcement at Dumont Dunes. Dumont Dune Riders respect the environment and all wildlife at Dumont and support the motto, "Pack it in, Pack it out".

DumontDuneRiders.com - "keeping you connected with Dumont": This site is for all users of Dumont Dunes. We strive to provide you with the latest Dumont news, information, events, pictures, videos, chat, etc. The DDR forum is a great place to stay connected with friends and other duners of Dumont. If you haven't registered yet, go ahead and do so. This site is free of charge to all members.


FoDD/ Friends of Dumont Dunes: This organization was created to represent all users of the Dumont Dunes and provides those Dune users with a strong, united voice to the Bureau of Land Management and other appropriate political, legislative and land management agencies, while promoting safe, responsible and proper use of the Dumont Dunes. An all-volunteer, user-based organization, Friends of Dumont Dunes is on the forefront of issues impacting the Dumont Dunes, acting as liaisons in the ongoing battle for the rights of the duning community and focusing on enhancing the off-road experience of all Dumont Dunes users. FoDD is the group that organizes the Dumont Dunes cleanups as well.
 



BLM/ Bureau of Land Management: BLM Rangers, as uniformed Federal law enforcement officers:
-Enforce Federal laws and regulations governing the public lands and resources.
-Provide a regular and reoccurring presence over the public land.
-Take appropriate actions when any unauthorized use or illegal activity is detected, including conducting investigations, issuing warnings and citations, and making arrests.
-Work closely with local, county, and state law enforcement officials in conducting law enforcement and search and rescue operations.
-Conduct informational and educational programs
-Provide emergency medical aid.
-Monitor resource conditions.
-Eliminate hazardous situations.


TRT/ Technical Review Team: On March 1, 2006, The Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) Barstow Field Office appointed eleven members to serve on Dumont Dunes Technical Review Team (TRT), which advises BLM on the collection, expenditure, and accountability of fees, and development of future facilities and services. This TRT was established at the request of the BLM Desert District Advisory Committee.

"The Technical Review Team members act as liaisons between the duning community and the Bureau of Land Management, which is the agency in charge of managing the Dumont Dunes. Communication is always important but more so now that money is flowing. Having a TRT should help keep the BLM accountable to us, the users."
