The
skies were clear and there was
an abundance of sunshine
at Dumont this weekend. Four
Stroke Association held their
4th race this weekend which
brought out a handful of racers
and spectators. Many
watched the races while some
took advantage of the epic dune
conditions. The
sand
was oh so smooth and there were
very few people in the dunes
which made for some great
duning. If you didn't have any
shade, you could definitely tell
that we are at the end of the
season. It became a little warm
during the middle of the
afternoon. Summer is coming!

Easter
weekend turned out to be a great
couple days in the dunes. The
weather had been very unpredictable,
but it didn't stop some duners from
proceeding their traditional Easter
duning plans at Dumont. Temperatures
ranged from lows in the 50's to
daytime highs in the 80's. The dunes
were incredibly smooth with not many
tracks in sight. The recent winds
created some pretty steep razors
throughout the dunes. Saturday's
meet & greet at the south pole was
small, but still remained a weekend
tradition for a handful of DDR
people on the site.

March 27-29 weekend reports
Well it was a nice weekend out at
Dumont. The weather was very
cooperative from Thursday night
through Sunday. The dunes were very
smooth from the recent wind, but
like any weekend they became
"tracked out" by Sunday. As the
temperatures rise, the warm dunes
bring less people to Dumont;
however, some duners still managed
to squeeze in one of the last few
cool-weather weekends of the season.

7th Annual
Dumont Dunes Cleanup
Thanks
to Friends of Dumont Dunes, the BLM,
and everyone who came out and helped
pickup trash, the annual cleanup was
a success as usual. It's great to
see the community come together and
help maintain the place we all enjoy
every year. Keeping our riding areas
clean is very important and it
showed last weekend how much
everyone cares. Even in these tough
economic times, many sponsors still
came forward to help make this
yearly event come together.

Dumont Dunes: race photos
On February 28th, 2009, over 20
Honda 70's showed up to the very first annual 70cc Regatta
at Dumont Dunes. The event was a gathering of friends,
family and members from DDR who not only share an interest
in Honda 70's, but know how to have a good time.
The day started with everyone in camp getting up and doing
some final adjustments to their trikes. After some coffee or
an energy drink, they got a feel for the track and were
ready for a day of 70cc action. There were several events
planned for the day.

President's Weekend
2009 report!
by
Pete@DumontDuneRiders.com
Despite
having no Jeeps drags or hill climbs
at Dumont Dunes this year, it was
still President's Weekend as usual.
It was a great weekend out there.
There was a very good turnout of
duners who made it out. Many were
worried about the sketchy weather
forecast, but Friday was the only
day of rain or wind. Saturday was
full of sunshine. The rest of the
weekend was cloudy and overcast, but
never saw any rain until just a few
sprinkles on Monday afternoon.

BBQ
Although
it was pretty crowded out there for
President's weekend, the "idiot
factor" seemed rather low this year.
Maybe it's the economy that has kept
the trouble makers at home, but the
crowd this year seemed to be more
into duning and less into "let's see
how drunk & stupid we can get". This
may be the reason the helicopter
never came in all weekend. The
number of accidents and mishaps were
much less this year than in 2006 &
2007.
Vendors
Row was busier than ever. It was
reported that some food vendors sold
out and other vendors did very well
on sales. There was even a rock
climbing wall there this year!
Saturday's great weather brought in
tons of duners to vendor row which
made it difficult to even find a
parking space in some spots. It's
great to see vendor row evolve into
a place where the Dumont community
gathers for lunch, go shopping, or
just cruise the row and spectate.
The
dunes were full of bikes, buggies,
and side x sides churning up the
damp sand which was about about 4
inches blow the surface. This made
for some choppy conditions in some
areas, but the sand wasn't too wet
or bad overall. The razors were
rounded over from the high traffic
and there were many lines to chose
from. Comp hill and Banshee Hill
were hot spots as usual. Duners
gathered to watch the usual drag
racing and wheelies up the hill.
Saturday night around 9 PM, it was
about 4 rows deep of duners.
Saturday's
2PM meet & greet at the south pole
brought in many people from the
site. The larger weekend meet &
greet gatherings tend to drag out a
tad longer than the smaller
weekends, therefore this one lasted
at least 45 minutes. There were so
many new faces and lots of regulars
that hung out and chatted away with
each other. The beautiful weather
also helped make it a great one.

you there? Can you spot yourself?

Some
Glamis regulars even made it out
this weekend. The guys from Extreme

of their usual stomping grounds.
These cars turned some heads all
weekend and were pretty noticeable

There were more

King Sand Cars were spotted out
there this weekend taking advantage
of the conditions. They weren't the
only ones though. In addition to the
occasional bike or Rhino, there were
a couple other big groups of
sandcars as well doing the same. It
was a great weekend for duning out
there for sure. Many stayed through
Sunday night and into Monday to
enjoy the big game on their
satellites. Good times at Dumont

due to the holiday being in the

that helped smooth out those damp,

Day 2008! Despite the tough economic
times lately, Dumont was still
fairly crowded this year for
Thanksgiving Weekend. Many duners
pulled in as early as Sunday and
Monday to celebrate the holiday with
friends and family at the dunes. The
aroma of home cooked feasts was
throughout the camp area all
weekend.
The clouds brought
in some rain on Tuesday and
Wednesday making for some very
choppy sand all weekend. The weather
finally cleared up by Thursday
evening and was great duning
weather. Day time highs were up in
the mid 70's and nighttime temps
were just cool enough to enjoy a
campfire.
Friday the old
skool "waterpumpers", Dune Masters
Calif. Inc, held their annual drag
races along the back stretch. As
many spectators gathered to watch,
these machines threw up incredible
roosts of sand as they drag raced
throughout the afternoon. Then on
Saturday, they held the traditional
hill climbs over on the steep side
of competition hill.

1st Annual Dumont Dunes
Poker Run!
Saturday
Nov 8th marked the date of the 1st
annual Dumont Dunes Poker Run
presented by Friends of Dumont Dunes
and DDR! The main objective of the
run was to raise awareness of the
critical areas at Dumont where the
Fringe Toed Lizard lives. Fives
checkpoints were places in strategic
locations of concern.
Registration started at 9 AM. The
first 10-20 minutes seemed as though
it was going to be a bust, but then
it happened...duners from all over
the place started flocking to sign
up and register. A huge line was
formed. Poker hands were sold for
$20 each or 5 for $50. The run began
at 10 AM.
The
first checkpoint was the
registration booth which explained
what the run was about and how it
worked. Second was the ranger
station which was to show the
importance of the out of bounds
areas in and around Sperry Wash. Third
was out to the north end of the
dunes along the old railroad berm.
This checkpoint was probably the
most important area of concern due
to it being in the spot where the
lizards are most populated. BLM staff explained the
importance of being careful in this
area and even had pictures and
literature on hand for riders. Duners
then drew
their cards, got their poker run cards punched
and on were on their way to the next
stop...North Pole.
North Pole was
considered the "DDR checkpoint". This is where
duners stopped for a water and shade
break and heard of the importance of
staying out of the Kingston
Wilderness area. Trails leading out
into the desert out there are not
open for OHV travel
should not be ridden on. It is prohibited. To
make the checkpoint that much more
worth stopping, DDR staff gave out
tons of free DDR stickers to those
who were there.
Next came the final
checkpoint, the south end. This
checkpoint had a couple areas of
importance. One was to let everyone
know of the Salt Creek Hills which
is further south of Big Dumont. That
area is closed due to archeological
preservation reasons. The second
reason for this stop was to also let
everyone know that the fringe toed
lizard can be found in and around
the brush near the rocky sand hills
in the south end of the dunes. Be
extra careful when riding out there
and stay away from these areas.
Finally after everyone had a full
hand of poker and their cards were
complete, they all met back at the
main checkpoint/ registration booth
to see whose hand was best. The
winner had a flush, second also had
a flush, and third was a straight.
First and third best hands ended up
being the same guy! Lucky man at
poker he was!
Thanks to
Performance Rhino out of
Las Vegas, additional bonus raffles
were added for some more prizes.
There was complete set of Dune Stars
mounted on ITP wheels that were
given away. Next was a set of
Polaris RZR skid plates that were
raffled off. Then some lighted whips
and many more goodies such as
Sandcrazd shirts were given out.
After
the poker run, everyone had about an
hour to rest up and then meet up out
at the south pole for the DDR meet &
greet. Most went on a dune run to
finish off the day with the sun
going down.
Sunday brought in some rain, but it
didn't stop some of us from riding.
As some were scattering to leave,
others were feverishly putting on
their riding gear to take advantage
of the extremely easy to read dunes
and traction created by the Mojave
desert's rain. A few hours later the
clouds broke apart and the sun
busted through making for a very
relaxing afternoon and sunset.
Overall the weekend was a great
turnout and we really look forward
to a 2nd annual Poker Run next year!
Much thanks to everyone who came out
and supported this event. 371 poker
hands were sold and all proceeds
went directly to the organization
that fights to protect our riding
area, Friends of Dumont Dunes. The
Dumont community's involvement in
events such as the poker run is
always tremendous. It really shows
how much the duners of Dumont care
about their riding area and how much
it is a part of their lives. This
isn't just a hobby for most, it is a
lifestyle!

Halloween Weekend 2008
Halloween 2008 video, Dumont Dunes
by metalalien
Halloween at Dumont was a hit as
usual. The turnout was slightly less
than past years, but there was still
a huge amount of duners who chose to
celebrate Halloween in the sand.
Tons of vendors filled vendor row on
both sides with everything from
items like sunglasses, t-shirts and
flags to some good grub such as
wood-fired brick oven pizza, BBQ, gyros,
funnel cake...you name it. Vendor
row has been growing larger every
year.
Trick-or-treaters made their rounds
Friday night from camp to camp.
Parents drove their kids around to
collect their share of Dumont
Halloween candy proudly displaying
their costumes and Halloween spirit.
The
comp hill night life was going on
Friday night due to some good
weather and everyone's enthusiasm of
the season's first big holiday
weekend out at Dumont. Sat night
brought in some rain, but that still
didn't keep the die-hards from
having a good time that night as
well.
The Saturday DDR meet &
greet was also a great
turnout. A large group of
duners from the boards came
out to meet up, put a face
to a name, and chat with
each other.
08/09 Season Kickoff
weekend
dune conditions: very
smooth dunes, full of sharp
and steep razors and witches
eyes weather: high temps
dropped daily from low 100's
on Wednesday to low 80's on
Sunday.
Lows in the
60's at night. Windy late at
night, occasional wind
during the day.
# of duners in camp area: very few entrance road: was

Dune season
has officially begun for
those that are ready to get
back out. The season kicked
off at the beginning of
October as a handful of
duners made their way back
out to the sandbox. The camp
area was fairly empty, but
there were some good sized
camps throughout the flats
and many sporadic trailers
and tents.
Many stayed
away from the dunes this
weekend due to the sketchy
forecast for chance of rain
and some wind. High
temperatures started out
very warm in the low 100's
on Wednesday and Thursday,
but quickly cooled down
making it a great weekend to
dune. It was extremely windy
late at night and early in
the morning on Thursday and
Friday, but the winds
somewhat cooperated during
the day.
If you
like virgin smooth sand,
this was the weekend to go.
The dunes were extremely
steep and sharp due to the
very common winds found at
Dumont. These were the kinds
of dunes you only find in
the middle of summer. Many
good lines are still there
for riding, but some are cut
short due to "walls of sand"
making some transitions
almost impossible to
conquer. The
ever-so-changing dune system
at Dumont was full of
"witches eyes" and drop offs
in some places so be careful
if you go out anytime soon.
Friday
night Life Flight flew into
Dumont for an injured duner.
There was an accident at the
top of comp hill. Rumor has
it that a sandrail lost
control and crashed at the
top of comp hill. There is
no report as of yet how they
are doing though.
The south
pole DDR meet & greet was a
hit like usual. Even with
rather a low attendance of
duners that weekend, the
south pole was full of
duners from DDR that came
out to say hi. Some stayed
and chatted, others were
anxious to go ride. It's always
great to put a face to a
name and meet up with other
riders of the website and
Dumont.
Vendor Row was
scarce this weekend
with only 2 vendors,
but Sandcrazd and
Mikie the welder
were there all
weekend catering to
duners needs. It's
always great to see
vendors out there
supporting our never
ending habit. You
never know when you
might there help
such as this duner,
Brenden, who found a
way to bust his
wheel IN HALF!
The
entrance road was very
satisfactory and was about
as smooth as you can make a
dirt road. Good job, BLM!
Next big
weekend...HALLOWEEN!
