I am in the process of getting SCUBA certified. I've done one pool session for a few hours, and now as of this morning I got my first open water dive completed! We dove for about 2 hours down to about 27 feet. Jerry, my instructor, has been amazing. He says I have been doing very well with all the exercises. I originally thought I wouldn't take to it very well because I have never been much of a water person, but there isn't much to it. I am very comfortable with it and look forward to doing some dives in some amazing waters soon.

Here are some pics from this morning.

damn it's early. The sun wasn't even up over the mountain yet.

Then as we're talking about what were going to do next, a giant group of triathlon swimmers (at least 20-40 total) comes right at us. :dope: So we just descended until they passed to make it easier on them. I bet since they were wearing swim goggles they were able and surprised to see us below. haha

You're gonna enjoy it! I never got certified, but some buddies that were, took me for a friends bachelor party 5 yrs ago, and it is still one of the most memorable things I've done. We went off Catalina, in about 30' or so. I never realized how kelp grew...amazing, like a forrest or something. We got some great pics! Saw my first Halibut, besides at the grocery store  . Looks like a little flying carpet creature when it scuried away.

I ought to get certified, it was so much fun! Looks like you've already learned to take the breathing thingy out of your mouth for pictures  , so you're already ahead of me :dope:

Badass pics, Andy! I can't wait to get down to the Caribbean and do some diving down there. Very soon! headbang1.gif

Today I completed my 2nd day of open-water diving. We went pretty far out from shore this time and deep enough to feel the thermocline at about 40 feet deep. It's crazy to hear the sound of boats above/ nearby.

super nice out there this morning...about 76 degrees. Water was nice and warm too.

Very cool. Just doing a quick snorkle swim in Hawaii and I got interested in maybe seeing what it would be like to try a scuba dive. Are the classes expensive? Did you buy or rent the gear? Pretty cool non the less now you can share things with Anna and see what she actually does under water.

Did you guys go out on the Zodiac? :boat:

No, I don't know what happened to that plan. We just went out to the same place as yesterday, but we ventured out a bit farther this time.

Very cool Pete, the family and I tried it (just some resort dives) a couple months ago @ Turks and Caicos. The kids and I want to get certified now, the wife... not so much :beerpint:

Nice! Yeah I can't wait to get into some clear ocean with some cool sh*t to see. With all the traveling we plan on doing over the years to come, I am stoked to finally get certified. I want to go check out all kinds of places now. rockwoot.gif

I think the going rate for most classes ranges from $250-350 to get certified. My instructor (Anna's boss at the Silverton) provided all the gear for me.

I agree, it's way to cool to share the experience with Anna. She was so pumped to hear I took to it very easily and loved it. She would have been crushed if I hated it, just like if I brought her to Dumont and she hated the dunes. That would bllllow! haha Fortunately neither one of those is the case though. We both got lucky.

BP the best IMO is to buy your mask/snorkel and rent the rest. I bought all my sh*t and now it sits. Even when we go to Hawaii I don't want to bring all that gear( plus my wet suit I have for the cold waters of So Cal, would be way overkill in Hawaii) so, I just rent it.

Course I bought it when I lived in So Cal and I'd go diving on a whim, that was pre K and easier plus ocean was close lol

I did some snorkeling off Maui when we honeymooned there...got a little carried away with it and ended up following a stingray, or maybe a sea ray, out kinda far from shore. Next thing I knew, there were three of them, and I started to panic a little  That was right around the time that australian animal dude (the one that said "KRANKIE")got killed by a stingray. At the time I thought I was swimming for my life, but looking back, I was probably just being a retard :P

good times for sure!

Anna dives and swims with them daily. I just read this to her and she says you were being a retard.

Buying your own mask, fins, booties and snorkel(if you use one) are pretty much a gotta have. I personally like having my own regulator, computer and buoycompensator. I was a warm water diver and kust packed a "Skin" type dive suit when we travelled. I hated diving cold water and haven't been in it in a long time. Diving in the Caribeian, South Pacific spoils you for sure. Buying used gear is probably the best way to accumulate your stuff as people go in full blast, then for whatever reason they bail. It sets and they pretty much give it away, even when they hadn't planned on it.

I don't agree. I won't be buying any used gear. Used gear that just sets gets old, degrades, and needs to be reinspected, rebuilt, and recertified. Seals dry up, hardware gets old, etc. We bought some used gear once and had to cough up about $300-350 to get it in working order.

In June 2013 we are going to be planning a trip on the Cuan Law, I've had a few friends do the trip and had an epic time. I'd recommend the extra $110.00 for the week which includes unlimited alcohol :beercheers: . If you and Anna want to go let a brutha know.

This can be true, however even with coughing up a little bit to get it up to par it becomes a very good deal on high dollar equiptment

Jackass. That's not what he meant. The feed show has nothing to do with the mermaids. laughing.gif And Anna is one of the safety divers, not mermaids. ;)

Oh yeah...tonight was my last scuba session. I am officially SCUBA certified! headbang1.gif

Congrats Pete! Your about to see things you never dreamed possible. Just remember even if it looks small, gentle and you want to touch it, don't. I almost touched a catipillar looking creature only to listen to my little voice. Found out on the boat that it injects the needles into your skin and is downright painful. Have fun, be safe and don't take any wooden sand dollars.
