Memorial Weekend Trip report

Recommended Posts

Since my Saturday gig got cancelled i decided to go ahead and make the trip to Coral Pink. My last trip was bad, only lasting 30 minutes due to wind.

This trip was a load up quickly, put the raptor in the bed this time. Went to the store to grab the last minute needs and waited for Mike and Jodi to head out. We hit the road officially a little after 7pm. We made some good time, even taking the Cane Beds (???) road. I had no idea it was so crazy, but it was fun in the F150.

Once we got there the meadows was pretty full, even for a Thursday night. We got our spot, saving some room for the folks coming in Friday. We unloaded, cranked up the fire, and were up pretty late. It was fairly windy, nice repeat from my last trip. i got blamed for the wind, especially since as i was loading up the wind basically stopped.

We went to the top if the hill Thursday night and found some cell reception, pretty spotty and not real good but it was there. Friday morning was our first run. It was pretty fun, then Mike had to say "do you notice the lack of power," which i hadn't yet. Once he said that though, i noticed it all the time. Lack of power and lots of time spin even with my Skat~Traks. Much different sand for sure. I like the combination of trails and dunes. reminds me of riding in Oregon Dunes.

Friday evening trip was over to ranger station with Mike, Jodi and I. As we were making the run i noticed Jodi wasn't behind me, so I got Mike to come back and we looked for her. She lost momentum, and i sand blasted her when i got to the top making it so she couldn't see. She was hanging on for dear life at the top of a steep 20 - 30 dune. I grabbed the bike so she could get off, turned the bike around, and slid it to the bottom. Tried to kick start the damn thing and finally got it to start. tried to go and killed it. Fired it up again, moved 10 feet killed it. Mike had to come down, one kick and it started. tried to go again, killed it. Finally got it going again, and tried to go up the hill but before i even got there it was bogging out. I guess it was floaded or something. I looped around and it started running better. Hit the hill in second and, well, why let off... so i jumped the top stopped and gave the bike back to Jodi. I will stick to my electric start, and raptor power thank you very much. It did jump nice though. :headbang1:

Mikes friends came in Friday night and we reset the camp a little. The whole camp area was filling in pretty good. Still windy, and i was still getting blamed.

Saturday went on a few rides with Charley, Mike Jodi and I. good times.

Mike and Jodi had a few mechanical issues. The RZR was running lean and mike found the boost line to the controller was off. he got the fixed and tuned it up. it was running good. First run Saturday Mike had a flat on his Raptor. Later run Jodi had her Exhaust tip come lose, Charley helped Mike fix it up with some riviets and the next run it all fell out anyway. Jodi said it was running better with out it.. lol

I got video and a few photos but i need to edit them.

Glad you made it back up there to experience a little more of what Coral has to offer. Yes, the elevation and soft sand make yur bike quite a bit down on power, but it is so worth it. I love riding up there.

Thanks for sharing, Adam. :thumb:

Ahhh yes a great fun and relaxing weekend indeed.

Meadows was the fullest that I personally had ever seen.

Like Adam said it was pretty full on Thurs evening when we rolled in, but we did get the spot that we wanted, by Friday evening it was super full. Guess we will have to do random, off weekends like we usually do and stay away from the holiday weekends at Coral too.. I believe we are still thinking Labor Day, if Mike is home and not working in China though.

Becky, Jill and Charlie all rolled in Friday, so we had ourselves a nice little group.

Great rides on Friday. Mike had his issues, so I showed Adam my favorite spot at Coral.. all the way at the East end with the great panoramic view. Then took the trail back that skirted the dunes and the fence line.. dunes have def moved, as part of that trail is now covered by dune and you had to side hill to get around, soon that trail will be gone.

Headed back to camp, Becky was already there and no Mike.. Adam and I were just getting ready to say 10 more minutes and lets go Mike hunting, when he rolled into the meadow. We kicked back for awhile, then went on a run with Becky leading while she broke in her new motor. By the time we got back, Mike had solved his problem :) We then waited for Jill and Charlie to roll in before heading to the ranger station for ice and maps to the Dinosaur Tracks http://www.blm.gov/u...track_site.html

Two minutes.. literally into the ride, we hit the first step dune heading out to the dune area, didn't get a good run, sand blasted at the top.. quad lost all power and dies.. I was leaning nicely forward, but anytime I tried to move the front would lift.. most of you all know I HATE HEIGHTS!!!! So between that and the fear of rolling, I was pretty much frozen. All I could do was hang on to the brake with one hand, leaning over the handle bars and holding the bumper with the other.. I was stuck about 2-3 feet from the top. Now that 20-30 foot dune looked about 100 feet down from my angle and perdicament  and it seemed like 30 mins before the guys came back. Went back on Sunday morning, just so I could hit it again and remove the fear, kinda laughed at myself when I looked at it again, went up, jumped it a bit at the top and stopped to take some pics. :idiot::dope:

Back to camp, dirt tires on and the adventure begins to find the Dinosaur Tracks. Hit the one way trail on the way, Sunday was reserved for exploring new areas and we were in NO hurry. Lunches packed and drinks loaded in Mike's new cooler bag in the back of the RzR. Made it to the track site and began the hunt for the tracks, mission Find Dino Tracks, successful!!! We found them all and wandered around looking for more, back to the Rzr's for some lunch and visiting with others that had arrived to do the same thing and also some geocaching. Kept offering my site map to a couple of them, so they knew what to look for and they kept saying oh no we got a map thanks though.. apparently he forgot his map and one of the couples came back to get it. the tracks are kind of difficult to find without the site map and some visual aides. So I played a little tour guide and gave them my site map and took them to the first track. Off we go to do some more exploring, found some cool rocks to drive on, similar to the track area, went up a little trail, got a little high centered, pushed off and continued on our way. Went across the road from the track site up trail 31 until you really could not go any further, we ended up at the base of one of the platues that you can see across the road. Pretty nice scenary and a totally differant change of pace. Now we understand why some people always hit the trails and why even though the meadows were pretty full, we still barely ran across anyone in the dune and dune trail area. Back to camp for visiting and telling of our adventure and relaxing around the fire, which had been kept going all day, just to take the chill off. For some it was nap and resting time, but me and Becky and her littlen went out to photograph some of the dead trees, that seem to catch both our attentions on this trip. It was nice to be able to meander and stop and take some scenic pics whenever we saw something that looked interesting :pics: Back to camp for ribeyes and campfire and conversations. We were all done riding for the weekend. Time to reflect on the great weekend and just enjoy the company.

We didn't even ride today, breakfast and pack up and hit the road home.

Saturday I blew my rear end :laughoff: errr tail pipe out ( I love our conversations with Jill and Charlie) quick fix, so we thought, and back out, lost it all over again, but Jill and Charlie found all the pieces on Sunday. However bike ran soooo much better without the tip and baffle, kicked easier, had more pep.. hmmmm....

As for Adam and the wind..... welllllllll....

Since my Saturday gig got cancelled i decided to go ahead and make the trip to Coral Pink.

Rap_ I am glad to hear that you experienced Coral Pink. It is absolutely beautiful there. Sucks about the wind, but with wind comes smooth dunes. :)

Thank you for stopping by and sharing your adventure with us. Also, what is your youtube screen name? (I now want to check out this video)

This is some unedited footage from one of our saturday rides. the later part of the video has some cool shots in it from the RZR.

This is round 2. I had to reupload the video because youtube screwed with it saying it was shaky.

Admit it Jodi, your bike just had hemroids and Charlie just stuffed them back in.

  I swear the best conversations happen at Coral Pink.

Thank you guys for the compliments on the reports and pictures. I can't wait to get Mike's littlest to those tracks!! He is a dinosaur freak!

I don't think Charlie made it on this video since it was mounted on Adam's helmet ~

First it was nice meeting you Adam!! I wasn't thinking he was on your video, he has a habit of recording things on peoples Go-Pro when it is mounted on their RZR when they don't know it. UNTIL they go to watch it. Last time he did it, it was pretty funny.
