Bathroom singing, also known as singing in the bathroom, singing in the bath, or singing in the shower is a widespread phenomenon.

Many people sing in the bathroom because it acts as an echo chamber, especially with tiles installed. The multiple reflections from walls enriches the sound of one's voice, and "bathroom singers" enjoy themselves. Small dimensions and hard surfaces of a typical bathroom produce various kinds of standing waves, reverberation and echos, giving the voice "fullness and depth".[1]

This habit was reported (with an attempt of explanations) centuries ago. For example, Ibn Khaldun in Chapter 1 of his Muqaddimah writes:[2]

"Likewise, when those who enjoy a hot bath inhale the air of the bath, so that the heat of the air enters their spirits and makes them hot, they are found to experience joy. It often happens that they start singing, as singing has its origin in gladness."

The bathroom singer is an ironic reference to mediocre or amateur singers.

Some celebrities admitted this habit (e.g., Chico Slimani), for some others, this singing was even a trigger to their career (e.g., Kishore Kumar).

Jon Anderson had tiles installed in the studio, to simulate the echo effect of one's vocals in a bathroom.

This effect was not used only by singers. Paul Simon wrote:[3]

"The main thing about playing the guitar, though, was that I was able to sit by myself and play and dream. And I was always happy doing that. I used to go off in the bathroom, because the bathroom had tiles, so it was a slight echo chamber. I'd turn on the faucet so that water would run - I like that sound, it's very soothing to me - and I'd play. In the dark. 'Hello darkness, my old friend / I've come to talk with you again.'"

"Weird Al" Yankovic in fact in 1979 recorded his first single, "My Bologna", in the bathroom across from the California Polytechnic State University student radio station where he was DJing at the time.

    [edit] In popular culture

    * There is a track "Bathroom Singer" on Arno Hintjens' 1988 album, Charlatan

    * In Pretty Woman, Julia Roberts sings in the bath tub; this was not a "true" bathroom singing: she had her earphones on, so this was rather karaoke or "sing-along".

    * "Singing in the Shower" is the name of several songs.

    * The song Singin' in the Bathtub first appeared in the 1929 film The Show of Shows. It was sung in numerous Looney Tunes animated shorts by characters such as Tweety Bird and Bugs Bunny, and has more recently been performed by R. Crumb & His Cheap Suit Serenaders and John Lithgow.

    * A collectible: 1961 Barbie Vintage Fashion: "Singing In The Shower" robe

    * Reviewers of the 1991 film The Adjuster [1] mention that "the film also pays fairly serious attention to the question why people sing in the shower."[4]

    * One episode of The Flintstones features Barney Rubble being able to sing quite well in the shower (even hitting a note that only dogs could hear). Fred Flintstone convinces him to try out for a talent show, only to learn that outside the shower Barney has no singing ability whatsoever.

    * In an episode of the animated television series Recess, it was discovered that Mikey had an awe-inspiring singing voice, but he could only sing in the school bathroom. A substitute teacher helped him find the courage to sing in front of an audience, which led to his performance at a school function.

    * In an episode of The Simpsons ("Homer's Barbershop Quartet"), Barney Gumble is found singing traditional Irish music on the floor of the men's room at Moe's Tavern. He is quickly chosen as a replacement for Chief Wiggum, whom their agent, Nigel, thought was "too Village People".

    * In Home Alone 2, Kevin McCallister records his uncle singing in the shower with his Talkboy, along with some threats when his uncle sees him. He then uses the tape later in the film to trick the hotel staff into thinking that his uncle is present in the shower of his hotel room and consequently scare away the hotel staff.

    * Sahara TV channel in India has started a reality show for singers named Bathroomsinger[5]

  3. Glad to see you guys are making it out. I remember you emailing me a while back asking if it would be a good idea. I think alot of people will definitely take advantage of it even if they have a motorhome or hauler with a shower. Grey tanks fill up fast and water runs out if they have a family or alot of people. Good luck guys. Hope it works out. Sounds like Vendor row will be pretty happening this Halloween.

I've never been out here before so it's going to be too much fun!!!

  4. Whats the time limit on the showers and what will be the hours of operation?

Just wondering if there will be slower times than others. It'll be nice to be able to grab a full shower instead of a campers sponge bath!

I will let you know by the end of this week what the hours will be... Long will be the hour the attendant will tell you! :D

  5. How many peps can you fit in one of those showers ? :P:booty: :beer_bang: :porn:

  9. haa hell no I'll pass then :barf:

I don't remember Aunt Jemima, but we did have one that looked like Halle Barry...

Hot tubs... I'll work on that...

What we do have is the Maui Suites. It's a hotel on wheels with sleeping quarters, living room, kitchen, bath and even a bar and one of the mobile suites, features a billards table! But they run $250 a night per bed... Most duners aren't willing to pay that to sleep, so we'll leave that one at home!

  10. Meant to add....

    Pricing as follows:

    One Shower $7

Two Showers $15 - Includes Individual Soap, Shampoo & Conditioner

Three Showers $20 - Includes Individual Soap, Shampoo & Conditioner

    Bath Towel Rental $2

    Experience $Priceless

And yes, these are as nice as they look. Attendant on duty keeps these babies spotless!

  11. We will be pulling in on Thursday late afternoon and the guy from BLM was encouraging once he saw our rigs! He said the perfect spot for us was at the end of Vendors Row... Do you guys agree with that?

  12. That road usually gets graded a couple times during Halloween weekend and they do it pretty early. They should be fine. :D

  13. *Actual attendant may vary!:driver: Now that's funny right there. I've used these facilities down at Fontana when I used to work security at the track and I must say the attendants looked a whole lot closer to Aunt Jemima than the model shown. Regardless, it was a nice hot shower and was kept very clean.

I can see it being utilized if the price is right. Lots of folks still doing the tent thing nowadays and this would be a nice supplement to the experience. Cost?

We're thinking $7 per shower, 2 for $15 or 3 Showers for $20. The 3 for $20 will include shampoo, conditioner and soap! And we have towels too!

  14. Maui Showers will be on Vendors Row Halloween Weekend! Featuring hot showers in private rooms, we invite everyone to indulge in the Maui experience. Towels, Soap and Shampoo will be available to those in need! As provider to NASCAR, Maui takes great pride in its fleet of showers and invites you to stop by and take a shower or a gander!
