  1. Carpetlayer apprentice. $30/day and lunch. Didn't know enough to actually do anything worthwhile or constructive, so I got to be slave labor. The sad thing is it was actually a raise from the job I left, minimum wage was $3.35/hr. at the time...

Second worst was actually being a carpetlayer. Made more money (actually pretty good money) but I soon found out that me and sharp implements don't mix. However, I can bandage pretty much any laceration with duct tape and fast-food napkins in thirty seconds flat... with less scarring than an orthopedic surgeon, and a helluva lot cheaper.

Third-worst: telephone soliciting for Olan Mills. I lasted exactly three days, and got fired... mostly because I wouldn't go to work anymore. Funny what some people expect...

  2. St. Anthony's in early July, just after the 4th. Maybe a couple days in Yellowstone while we're in the neighborhood, we have friends with property outside Driggs... that's the big one.

At the rate gas prices are going up, I might be selling a kidney to cover gas... :beercheers:

A weekend at Emma Wood... a weekend at Lake Lopez... Thunderboats in September... that's about it.

  3. Still a lot of side camera mounts around and the producers are always looking to save a dime. It don't have to be a dome to be a gyro like the news copters. Even one guy in a vest can have gyro's. Take the door off, strap him in and take off.

The Robinson has got to be cheaper but there is no such thing in the helicopter business as cheap. Do you know what the Robinson burns for fuel? Pump gas? What's the range on that thing? Seems to me if they flew it there they got to be refueling on-site. A Long Ranger = tanker truck with fuel from Vegas, mucho $$$ or limited filming time over the dunes.

My b*tch about helicopters is I NEVER got to go because of their limited fuel and payload. I did my thing and waited for it to come back. Now jets that's another matter. Of course now chained to a desk I don't get out much but I'm thinking a movie, the film guy, the RZR, and a couple of union stickers equals an excuse to dune.

Nah...better not. Better to keep a certain management owned sand car wondering which RZR contains a union rep otherwise I'll be picking sand out of my teeth and to return the favor I don't need to advertise.

    Eli

I think the Robinsons burn 110 lo-lead. Air-cooled, carbureted, horizontally-opposed 4-cylinder (in the R22)... sound familiar? A flying VeeDub will be a lot cheaper than a turbine, anyday.

As for cameras, when I saw it all the doors were closed. So I'm guessing maybe they were either scouting locations or practicing moves. Or maybe just playing... God knows I'd use any excuse I could (and have :bawl: ) to get some dune time in...

I used to do aerial camera in LA, Wescam systems in an Astar for KCOP. One helluva lot better than hanging out the door on a harness, which I've also done once or twice...

  4. We saw the helicopter Saturday, flying really low at times, actually below the tops of the surrounding dunes. I couldn't see if there was a camera onboard or not. Certainly not one of the gyro-stabilized ones that are used in movies and TV news. Later I saw it parked and tarped by the Red Bull tent. FWIW it's a Robinson R44, small four-seater.

As we were leaving Saturday night we passed a convoy of flatbeds with Hummers and lights, headed up the 127. I guessed movie shoot, but I don't think it's related to the Red Bull guys.

  5. "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain. Thank you for flying with us today.

As you exit, please disregard any pungent odor you may notice in the cockpit area, and please excuse your flight crew for not personally greeting you as you deplane.

Additionally, I'd like to invite you to join me for drinks in the lounge. I plan on being there at least thru Thursday, or until the shakes subside.

Lastly, anybody with a spare pair of boxers, men's large, please see the flight attendant."

  6. Man critical after ricin find in Vegas

    2 hours, 15 minutes ago

Police say a man is in critical condition after the deadly toxin ricin was found in his Las Vegas motel room.

Las Vegas police Lt. Lewis Roberts says the man has been in a coma since he was found in his room at the Extended Stay America Motel on Thursday.

He's one of seven people hospitalized after the ricin was discovered. Police have said most were examined as a precaution.

Roberts says police don't think foul play is involved, and the FBI says the case doesn't appear to be terrorism-related.

But authorities aren't sure why the man had a vial of powdered ricin in his room.

Ricin is made from processing castor beans, and can be extremely lethal.

    Okay... WTF? :headbang1:

  7. I dont know if any one posted on the Bronco that rolled over on that girl on Sunday night Prez weekend?

We heard about that as we were leaving on Prez Day Monday... both femurs = serious ouch. She's lucky to be alive, that's an easy recipe for a bleed-out.

:dope: on offering your Rhino. Last season at G, a buddy and I were night-cruising the little dunes along Gecko when we got flagged down by a group of quads. Seems their buddy had lawndarted pretty good, broken wrist chest trauma ALOC (altered level of consciousness) etc etc. We didn't have our phones with us (last time I've made that mistake) so we had to run back to camp to call it in.

Since the ranger station was closed, the only EMS available was an ambulance out of Brawley, 30 min ETA. Once they got there, they had no way to get into the dunes where the wreck was. They wanted to call in a helo (additional 2-hr ETA  ) but we convinced them to take a ride with us. We loaded one EMT in my friend's car and the other and a backboard in mine, and off we went.

They got the victim stabilized, then we strapped the poor bastard, on the backboard, across the back seats of my car (head out one side, feet out the other) and duned him back to the ambulance. I don't think I roosted him too bad... but I did have to stand on it pretty good to get out of the bowl. :eatdrink021:

Bottom line, the guy got transported within 90 minutes or so of doing his Superman with a half-gainer. If he had waited for the bird, he could have easily been out there for three hours plus. No telling what might have happened...

  8. First trip to Dumont for me, I had a blast. We arrived Friday evening and pulled out Monday afternoon. Some pix:

  9. There are a few peeps that keep making STATEMENTS of FACT so I am assuming one of you know what exactly was being filmed and why.

CARE TO SHARE? Inquiring minds would like to know.

I'll second that... there's several shows that follow the "Cops" format. Or it could have been a documentary crew. So if anyone had a chance to ask them who they were with, pipe up. Or not, in the big picture it doesn't really matter anyway... they were there, pictures were taken, now it's over.

A couple observations from a TV news guy: One, there's some confusion over whether or not talent releases are required in those circumstances. The answer is, it depends on who's doing the taping. News crews don't need releases in public areas, and only need consent of property owner in private. The basic issue is whether or not the company doing the taping is using the images expressly for profit. If yes, then you have a right to be compensated for use of your likeness. BTW, minors in public places are like anybody else... public is public. No release or parental consent is required for news usage.

Two, about LEOs "dialing it up" for the camera: Sure, it happens all the time. But, based on my experience in similar situations... I'll be willing to bet your friend either had attitude or you got a cop having a bad day, probably a little bit of both. Sorry your friend got the short end of the stick, but if she hadn't been a minor with alcohol...

Third, the "LEO" Funco... FWIW the rangers at Glamis have two, they were donated by Funco and the ASA for rescue and enforcement purposes. As to whether or not tax dollars were used, it's really irrelevant. Tax dollars are used to buy trucks, and helicopters, and trailers.. all sorts of things they use at Dumont. If there's a demonstrable need for specialized equipment, I don't have a problem with my tax dollars being spent to buy it. I'm sure if you or someone you love was wadded up at the top of Comp, you'd want rescue to be able to reach you... and that POS standard travel car I saw on the way out Monday ain't gonna cut it. :booty:

BTW, I just wanted to add: Prez was my first trip to Dumont... Mikey likes it! We'll see everybody out there again...

  10. Is the 4x geared the same? All other things being equal, I'd have to guess the transfer case might affect your GCWR, since you're adding another thing to break :idiot: Seriously tho, there would be some parasitic loss thru the T-case, although 1300-lbs worth seems like a lot.

  11. We used to go to Pismo when we had a TH and a 4x4. We haven't taken the moho there, and probably won't. It's a blast on a quad, a little small for a rail IMHO, and watch out for the slipfaces. And wash your stuff really good when you get home, if not before.

We went to Winchester Bay in 2002, I loved that place.

We're going to St. Anthony this summer, around 4th of July. Counting the days already...
