  1. The California Off Road Vehicle Association (CORVA) will be holding their second attempt at elections. The date is set for Saturday, May 31st and it should be an exciting meeting as long time president Mr. Ed Waldheim is officially retired as the president. We have 2 CORVA members currently seeking to hold the president title. Go to the CORVA web site at; http://www.corva.org to see all the nominated candidates listed to date.

I'm currently the Southern Regional Secretary for CORVA and I'm seeking the office of Vice President of Administration. As I've done for the ASA over the past 7 years, I would like to better serve and help organize this near 40 year old organization for the benefit of ALL that ride in California. Only CORVA members can vote in the upcoming elections, so if you would like to support my efforts to take CORVA into the future please consider joining.

    http://www.corva.org/join.html

I'm also running with other folks too, we call ourselves "TEAM CORVA 2008" and have a vision to take CORVA to the next level. Myself and ASA volunteer Katherine Kelsey (who with husband Darren have overseen the volunteers for the ASA booth over the past 5 years at the Sand Sports Super Show) are seeking your support. Katherine is running for the open Secretary office and currently a CORVA Field Representative. We are both members and officers of R&R Duners Club that ride at both the ISDRA and Dumont Dunes.

Not just duners, Katherine and I along with our families love to ride desert too. We each have an adopted Joshua tree at El Mirage Dry Lake bed and ride the hard pack there and other places. And Katherine can drive her rail or her motorcycle with the best of them!

Take a look here for more information on our goals and our other team members seeking office. We have extended candidate bio's with contact information on the site below.

  2. Our opponents are in this for the long haul. They are not going to stop. Their agenda is to push us off the land completely.

    Does this sound familiar?

    1. Cut funding while raising the expense.

    2. Pass the cost of support to the individuals there by making it cost prohibitive to engage in the activity.

    3. Limit access to the activity and the land the activity is engaged upon there by limiting the amount of participants that can effectively use the recreational area.

The environmentalist will keep 'circling' this strategy until the riding area's are completely closed off.

Great first post and welcome to the board. I see you understand...

Last weekend I took a trip to the :freakin_nuts: and while there picked up the trash. It sure would be nice to have EVERYONE on the same page...

  4. wouldnt it be cheaper and more asthesticly pleasing to use

large rocks to border that path ?? ill go one step further and suggest maybe native rocks in and around thebackside of the dunes by south pole . so its naturale to the area.

its not as if they have to be slammed together to keep quads out but with that and markers would seem more naturale and less intrusive . and the cost would be greatly reduced. it could be done in roughly 3 weeks with a 4 man crew and a track loader and a post hole digger and some sighns roughly 150 to 200 thousand with sighns.

    I agree... :DDRrocks:

  5. I'll say this over and over... EDUCATION is the key!

If those that recreate at the dunes KNOW how important it is to keep out of those areas, I believe the majority of OHV incursions would stop.

There is but ONE road that leads into Dumont and groups like FoDD should be focusing their efforts on educating the users in my opinion.

  6. I'm making comments on the BLM Barstow field offices grant proposal. This funding would come from our Green Sticker fund and I don't really see the need, do you?

BLM Barstow Field Office ~ Draft OHMVR 2008 Grant Application

    Project 1: Dumont Fence – 9 Miles

    Project Type: Development

    Total Requested: $500,000.00

    Project Description:

This project would construct about 9 miles of post and cable barrier around portions of the Dumont Dunes OHV Recreation Area boundary. Most visitors come here to enjoy the sand, mounds and mounds of sand. The perimeter fence will have no affect on this legal OHV riding opportunity in the sand. However, public lands closed to motorized use surround the dunes, and illegal intrusions by OHVs are increasing each year. The barrier will help enforce the boundary and prevent illegal riding in closed areas.

The closed areas were never open to riding and include wilderness, areas of critical environmental concern, important cultural sites, sensitive biological resources and Death Valley N.P. Impacts caused by the illegal riding have reached a tipping point and action is required. The perimeter barrier is intended to allow the legal OHV riding opportunity to continue, and is a preferred alternative to possible closures and restrictions.

If approved, funded and completed, can you guess where the money will come from in the future to keep it maintained? :beercheers:

  7. Has the new fee structure been set in stone yet or are there still some issues to be worked out?

It is not set in stone yet. The BLM still needs to discuss the fees with the RRAC (Recreation Resource Advisory Council) when it is established and publish the information in the Federal Register. Next TRT meeting is August 21st where I'm sure this will be a main topic. The information above was given out at the last DAC meeting in the Barstow field managers report.

  8. Happy B-Day Pete. :bawl:

Only 2477 more peeps here on DDR need to wish you a great day... :bawl:

And you don't look a day over 29 either... :D

Thanks for everything you're doing for our dunes. :banghead:

  9. From the Barstow Field Manager's Report from the last DAC meeting.

    Recreation:

The Barstow Field Office has discussed fees with the TRT for Dumont Dunes for the past two meetings. For the next season, the TRT supports fees of $30 a week and $90 annually for non-holiday periods. For the five major holiday periods there would be a $10 surcharge for each holiday. The annual pass can be upgraded to include all holiday periods for $30. The TRT also supports using off-site locations for the sale of passes. BLM will be discussing the fees with the RRAC when it is established. The process to increase the fees will also include publication in the Federal Register.

    Next TRT meeting:

    August 21, 2007 10 AM

BLM Barstow Field Office Conference Room

2601 Barstow Road, Barstow, CA 92311

  10. Off-road recreation is one of the fastest growing sports and industries in the United States with 75-80% of that being on the west coast. Basically there are more people riding everyday. The problem with that is there is more and more land being taken away by the eco-terrorist everyday too. That's why any place you can legally ride has become over crowded. Which in turn causes more problems which gives the eco-terrorist more ammo to close more places. Unless an effort is made to unite the off-road community, our sport and hobby will be taken away from us by not letting us have access to land that rightfully belongs to the people. Some of the bigger corporations also need to get involved with this but they are afraid to offend the eco-terrorist faction. I know this sounds like a rant but check into it. That's why we must appreciate and support the people that our tring to keep ANY off-road area open. I have much much more but I'll leave it at that. :rockwoot:

  11. I really like the flyer idea and the signs on the way in.

I learned a lot of rules :rules: from DDR that we didn't know before and I share them with my family. But like what was stated before not every is on our site, so if we can eduacate people to keep the dunes safer than let's do it. :thumb:

    Just my

Exactly, the flyers are easy to do. On the signs, the BLM is planning to install some signs along the road for next season that can be changed (rotated) to a new location to keep it looking different. My sign idea was something that Sandemon suggested years ago, I just put it down on paper... Picture 3 signs (locked down) with short messages along the road in the canyon area spaced out about 50 yards. I thnk people would read them.

Also, the road work to take place will NOT be coming from our user fees, the BLM has money set aside for the rest of the work, we paid for the materials there now, they pay for putting it down RIGHT! (I look forward to a nice road too)

  12. Well I went to the TRT meeting to see if I couldn't get BLM approval for my sign idea. It was mainly shot down by the BLM due to the new road construction so it still might happen. If you would like to see my plan send me an email and I can forward it to you. I'm not going to paste it here. Those that attended the meeting saw the sign I proposed and most thought it would work out fine.

Another thought I had, what if we had a flyer campaign where anyone reading the DDR board could download the latest safety flyer from FODD, print it out, (as many as they wish) then pass them out on their trips. That would cost a big NADA too. :D

  13. I was able to attend the meeting yesterday. Many discussions on all the topics listed. Most interesting to me was the lady in Tecopa and her issues with OHV's in general and the highway noise. Terry did a good job of explaining what he learned after talking with her. All I will say, she has an agenda. :stick_smack:

The issue of trash on the ground remains. And especially those bags found on Hwy 127 both ways. I asked about doing a "public awareness campaign" on the way in and out. I offered up a plan for 3 temporary signs to be installed that could show a quick & short message, like those of the old Burma Shave ad's. I brought a sample sign with me. A message like "Pack It In - Pack It Out", or "15mph by ALL camps" might really help. I will have to wait until the road is completed, then maybe.

The road is going to be done over the summer and to be ready by October, bids going out real soon. The extension of the concrete pad driveway will start soon too, the river is almost dry. :D

  14. Thanks to all that pick up the trash left by others...

I would like to suggest getting a sign made for the road into Dumont. Place it on the way in just after the permit area when people are still going quite slow to read it. There is a sign there now regarding pack it in - pack it out but a larger sign would be better. Something like; Don't help the Sierra Club close Dumont, Pick up your trash!

  15. Here is our trip report:

    http://www.rrduners.com/modules.php?name=C...page&pid=19

We had the fastest and most thrilling rollercoater rides on that trip, no Moon at all. Found the perfect hill to do the no lights, no motor coasting down the hill ride in the deep black of night. The hill was very steep and then about half way down got even steeper to the bottom just before going almost straight up and bottoming out the long travel cars... so cool...

  16. I used to belong to a mini-truck club back in the late 70's early 80's (gosh, I'm old... :P ) and we used to do ralleys runs all the time. At those checkpoints they would have a contest or game to play. I think we could have one checkpoint with a golf theme,,, like put a round target about 30' away and give points to where you land it...

yes, the ending must be located near a bathroom... good thought...
