  1. 38604. A person operating a recreational off-highway vehicle

shall not ride with a passenger, unless the passenger, while seated

upright with his or her back against the seatback with both feet flat

on the floorboard, can grasp the occupant handhold with the seatbelt

and shoulder belt or safety harness properly fastened.

I have been reading this over several times and still keep thinking something is not right. How can they be so stupid as to open themselves up to a ACLU lawsuit. Consider disabled people or kids with no legs.

Look at it this way: A person operating a recreational off-highway vehicle

Buckle up those kiddies and enjoy the dunes! Get a helmet though.

Boy I hate the English language sometimes. That word "and" just before shoulder belt may have blown my whole argument.

  2. i would say a reasonable enforcer would not harrass a parent for driving around with their child. and may have something to do with trying to state "how" a person should be properly seated more then the fact that a child can't reach the floor. There is no mentions of children and if properly secured with a helmet i don't think they will be bothered.

Remember the "OR", one side is about seatbelts and shoulder straps. The other side is about a harness. Child seats have a harness. If your kid cant reach the floor, install a harness. Problem solved.

shall not allow a passenger to occupy a separate seat location not

designed and provided by the manufacturer for a passenger.

Lets try this one, the manufacturer designed and provided a seat in a specified location on the vehicle. Nowhere does this prohibit an aftermarket seat to be used in the manufacturer specified location. Seats can wear out, need replacement. I'm not forced to use the original manufacturers model as long as it is mounted in the designated location.

  5. Ok I get you can modify a floor, but that only will work if you only take small children and not another adult. But who really wants to modify a floor in their rzr or rhino, to make it only kid legal, and kids grow like weeds, modify the floor everytime your kid grows an inch. I get the concept, but that IMO is abusrd. Even more so to take the family aspect out of a family oriented sport.

Thats why I suggested someone like H town look into this. The mod could be adjustible to accomidate different riders.

  6. I would have to say that the biggest thing is going to be kids, am I reading this wrong or is it going to be illeagal to take your 8 year old on a ride if he/she cannot touch the floor with their feet? So if you have a family, someone is always going to be sitting in camp, cause you can no longer include your small children in the sport?

I know this sounds stupid but you could use extended soles on their riding boots. Stupid fix for a stupid law.

  7. i have read where they will go by the vin so what it was originally built with is what they will judge it on.

i could see them say a extended floor isnt factory and doesnt qualify. next they will say my custom cage is illegal

Well since the law itself identifies what the vehicle is based in certain criteria, the vin number means nothing IMO. If they wanted to use that as criteria, they should have included a specific series of ID numbers but didn't. This is similar to the way we get around the assault weapon and handgun roster laws for guns. They list 5 criteria that make a vehicle a "Recreational off-highway vehicle" , nothing more. VW trikes are registered as motorcycles. The vin is still the same. They don't define what a floor is.

  8. it will be a "custom built" and manufactured for 4 seats and has a 1100cc engine. just has rhino plastics.

the worst part is I actually wore a helmet while driving it before. and when your harnessed in your field of vision is drastically reduced. which IMO is more dangerous.

it's funny how if you have a more powerful engine you don't need a helmet lol.

Once you go over 1000cc's your good. You may have to prove it but though. Another way out of it is to remove the steering wheel. Fab a handlebar type setup. Law says "Stering wheel". Just a thought.

Looks like a great opportunity for someone like H Town to build kits and sell "floor extenders" for the little ones.

I'm not opposed to the helmet laws.

  9. Well, if you want the quickest to horsepower for what you got, 100 shot of nitrous. Every other option for that car is expensive. The car was built for a light engine. Need to be realistic with your expectations. Anything can be done for cost. Out of ideas friend.

  10. You need to find a guy in Vegas that understands VW's and have him take a look. I wouldn't put a dime in it till you know the rest of the car is good. You need to take it out and have fun while learning the car and finding the other issues that always pop up. Also, are the pushrods aluminum or chromoly? 006 is for aluminum (stock), the chromoly is a loose zero. A magnet will tell the difference.

Maybe find a vw off road group local and get with them for a few runs and ask questions. It is really hard to help with carbs from a couple of hundred miles away.

  11. Is the accel pump shot working when you give it gas? Should dump gas immediately. If not, that's your problem. Those are big carbs for a 1776, which is a relatively small VW motor. When you hit the gas, that is a lot of air being dumped in. Need lots of gas to compensate. Look for play in the linkage, shouldn't be any.

On a side note and in my opinion, I wouldn't mess with VW's anymore. Not since engines like the Ecotec can be had fully equipped for less than the price of any quality VW stroker motor. About 160 hp all day, reliable, parts availability, no adjustments all the time, turbo options. The only reason my Manx still runs a VW is because it hasn't died yet. I don't beat it up either. Nowadays, VW engines are for purists and old schoolers. They are not cheap anymore and replacement parts are junk.

  12. Is the flat spot off idle? Check the accelerator pump shots. See if they are working. I had a flat spot on my Manx off idle and it was that junk 009 distributor. Replaced it with a 034 Vacuum canned one and problem gone.
