Issues with rear drums

Sup guys hope someone can help me out or point at the correct direction.

 

I bought this dune buggy with a type 1 tranny and swing axle. But the moment I switch over to the sand wheels and tires the lug studs keep falling off (tighten with pressure)

 

Some say wheel is too thick or needed longer lug studs

 

please help. Shop told me they are 57’ and lower year drums

When I ran VW with drums I had studs. I quickly changed over to disks and never looked back. I know this doesn't help you right now, but might change you opinion on setup.

It was straight forward as I recall. Of course that was a while ago. I did sell the sand rail to Irnbear he might have the receipt which would provide more info on the source.

Disc brakes are so much better

switch them and don’t look back😂

 

Are your studs blue loctite in

The holes in your drum look oval

 

i just went to studs on my other rail, hopefully I don’t have the same issue

Have had both Reg Wheels and Sand Wheels on them for one weekend, so far so good

 

the setup I got from SandBox is really good & disc😃

One other thought here. If you're lug nuts are tapered then you need to get tapered washers, so that it's a flat surface on the rim. Like these.

i ran those and with these lug nuts and still had the same issues. Is it because the wheel is too thick or what.

i ordered that brake kit. What lug nuts or studs should I go with. 
 

same lug nuts but with those washers or just say screw it and go with studs

I went with studs. It makes it easier to mount.

That is a mystery😬

There has to be something wrong with the drums

Did it happen on both sides?

makes it so much easier to change out wheels when you need to

I don't see any cotter pins on the axle shaft.

 

The lug nut holes don't look like they have a lot of threads left and being elongated can't help either:

Yeah it happened on both sides, but my guess was that the drums are old. Came off a 57. Good luck to me finding a pair. So that’s why I just bought the conversion quick.

That I couldn't tell you. I bought them here in Vegas at Butch's Speed Shop.
