  1. why?

I can maybe get a great deal on a 50D so why not? :beercheers:

a "D40" is a Nikon and a Canon 40D body is around $900 and a 50D is around $1175 from what I remember. Canon for cameras and Epson for printers, although the gap is closing with printers.

  2. Good idea, Sean. BUT...I think the government paying off my toyhauler and house sounds way better to me. :beercheers: Think about it. :laughoff: I'd be spending azz loads of cash and stimulating the eff out of the economy. :laughoff: Tell you one thing...I'd be one STIMULATED ma facka if that happened. :ah: :laughoff:

ok, back to your plan. :laughoff:;)

kinda thought being stimulated was a prerequisite for any catagory of "facka", ma facka. :laughoff::dayum:

  3. Who is using the internet @ the dunes? If you are, what are you using? how well does it work? any info would be great!

    Bottoms up!

    Chuglife Clothing.com

    Drunk Co.

I have Verizon wireless, some spots are snail speed and some spots just a 100' away I have got 2.4 MB P/Sec (broadband). It's NOT the USB modem, a Sierra 740 for the express card slot with an external cell antenna on the motorhome roof. Had it for 2 years.

  4. That's a damn good idea. Get a few of you guys that take badass pics and have a chitload of peeps go to one spot that has it all...jumps, razors, a nice berm that you can slide, etc. :blury: We'd be sure to get some killer pics. Maybe prez weekend like out to the back left of comp where everyone jumps or something. ??

Pete, consider this, I, or if 80grit wants to, we can scout out a good spot (for light/shadow angle etc) and at the meet & greet, which would be a convenient pre-stage, pass the word around. It could even be during a run after the M&G through the area that's been scouted out. If 80grit is down for it we can bail out of the M&G a few minutes early to set up and you or whoever lead the pack through the "zone", like a decent uphill that rolls out to a gradual down slope. It would provide for good shots of wheelies up the hill and a jump over the top if people want to. The leader could make a big loop back around big enough so the last duner is over the top of the uphill, people will get the idea. The loop can have a sweeper slope for sliding/drifting too. It can have something for eveyone, some are wheelie freaks, some big air freaks, others are big powerslide freaks. Oh yeah, and dunefreaks...... :dunno::laughing: What you think? These scaled down shots were impromptu, no setup or time to get in the right spot, so set up should be better.

Mark, Lou, Randog, Stu and Donny almost to the N. pole and I'm on top of comp

  5. If we can get a bunch of riders to show off a bit.....and ride me over in their Rhino. I'll bring Big Bertha out

    300mm f2.8L IS

Wont fit in my back pack

    post-14-1233764799_thumb.jpg

If that's the lens I think it is it weighs about 6 lbs and costs 3+ 50D bodies  Which body do you shoot with?

  6. 50 D is a great camera. And These are Excellent len's. Top of the line Canon L series Lens and 2 of the highest rated Canon Len's

If you guys go out shootin......I wanna go too :hatdance:

A Dumont shootout? A couple cameras and a couple people jumping and wheelies might draw a crowd which will fuel the "hey, you think that's bad ... watch this!" and it usually is quite entertaining. :dayum::pics: = :blury::beat::randog: and maybe :mog: not to mention a couple of :dunno::laughing:

  7. this is true... but ... I have seen lots of lights on the front of 70s... so I know someone on here has to have one!

Halogen will work with AC or DC but HID is DC ONLY. Read your documentation for your light, it will say reverse polarity will damage the electronics and void warrantee, plus you'll ruin your chances of having a fan club when people destroy their HIDs

  8. Kerosene will burn as hot as gas but as long as diesel in a smudge pot and no soot, if it's not too expensive. I have a washing machine tub with a hole in the bottom and it fit upside down on top of another one and we fed wood through the top, hot as hell, wind proof and smoke free.

  9. Yep, read a bunch of that thread. That's mostly how I ended up looking at the 50D.

I understand about that lense too. This is the one I was eyeing if the 28-135mm lense didn't cut it.

If I spend more than 500/ 600 bucks on a camera, I rather go all out with a high quality metal body. ;)

Pete, I didnt notice the 70-300, if you want campfire pics or pics where you're standing close to the subject the 70mm cropped means it'll be 112mm equivalent and kinda restrictive. If you can wait till after pres weekend to decide and/or buy you can check out my 40D, same as 50D with respect to angle/field of view issues and can actually see the differences of the focal lengths . I have a Canon EF 24-70mm (38-112 eq)1:2.8 L USM and a Canon EF 70-200mm (112-320 eq) 1:2.8 L IS USM lens plus a Canon EF 1.4x II extender for the 70-200 that extends the range to an equivalent of 448mm.

  10. Thanks guys...the info is much appreciated!

Do you think that 28-135 lense is decent to start out with or should I just buy the camera body and get a better lense from the get go?? Will that one have some ok zoom?

As 80grit said the 40/50D sensor isn't a "full frame" sensor, it's an aps-c, means there's a crop factor of 1.6, translated a 31mm aps-c sensor camera gives you the same field of view as a 50mm full frame sensor. A 35mm(the film dimensions) film camera at a focal length of 50mm is 0 magnification (wysiwyg) but a 40/50D crop factor of 1.6 at 50mm focal length gives you the field of view equivalent of an 80mm full frame sensor. here's avisual that puts it in perspective.

    post-1632-1233698594_thumb.jpg

    Red=full frame sensor, Blue=APS-C (1.6) sensor

Canon has "C" size lenses but won't work on a full frame camera if you ever upgrade. So your question on the 28-135mm, with the crop factor it will give you the equivalent results a 45-216mm lens on a full frame digital or 35mm film camera, which is a slightly wider field of view than your eyeball vision at 45mm to the equivalent of 216mm at max zoom. As a side note the Canon 5D is the next camera above the 50D and is full framed. Hope this all makes sense, now only a few thousand more tech points to go. :rockwoot:

  11. yep i run a checker auto $!00 7" hid on my 04 honda 450r kick start no battery. i have it wired into the high beam circuit no real flicker very bright puts all the stock quad lights to shame. have posted the pic several time here it is again.

I looked your quad up and it has a rectifier/regulator and a capacitor which takes the place of a battery. Without these it would fry. Too bad all quads don't have these.

  12. Maxis trailer tires or greenball are great tires.

I've run the Maxis and they were fantastic. Greenball have great real life ratings too. Stay away from Goodyear marathons. They self distruct(they seperate, peel and bulg). The goodyears were ok but they went down hill when they started manufacturing them in China. Go to RV.Net and read all the horrer stories on the marathons. Mine fell apart in about a years time.

The Towmasters are Greenball, never had 1 fail in over ten years

  13. Here's my situation. Some of you guys might remember a while back when I was camera shopping.

I bought the Canon SD1100 and loved it, until it broke and I used the replacement insurance about 3 times. That got old quick. What's the point of a camera that takes badass pics but doesn't hold up right?

    post-3-1233636023_thumb.jpg

I then traded up that camera in on an Olympus Stylus 1030 SW. Basically it is a indestructible camera. Shock proof, dust/ sand proof, water proof, drunk proof etc. I love it except for the lense is crap for any kind of quality zoom shots. It's perfect for dune trips, but when I really want to get some good shots, I want a better camera.

    post-3-1233636065_thumb.jpg

So now I have been checking out the Canon 50D. Point and shoot compact cameras aren't gonna cut it anymore so that is why I am looking at a DSLR camera like this. The reviews seem like it is what I am looking for. It looks like Costco has it the cheapest and it seems to come with a good all-around lense. I'm hoping someone on here (80grit, SP2, etc :dope: ) might have 1st hand info or some good camera knowledge to give my some feedback before I take the plunge one of these days here soon.

I understand I cannot bring this out on every dune ride and beat this thing up like my camera I have now, but I'd like to have a bitchen camera for when I'd get more into taking pics. I have been taking more and more of an interest in photography and I think this camera will do it for me. Any feedback is appreciated. :rockwoot:

    post-3-1233636091_thumb.jpg

Pete, I use a 40D and the 50D is basically the same but with more MP a hi-def monitor (920,000 vs 40D 230,000 pixels) latest processor, 6+ frames/sec = 40D. dp-review is the best >>> http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos50d/ <<< 32 pages and tells you everything and compares to previous model as well as compares to other brands, at this level it's usually only Nikon. I'm looking at the new 5D mark ll, but not as fast as the 40/50D . Check my 40D out when we do those pix we talked about. Typically most peoples camera will out-resolve their lens, the lenses that will match will usually cost more than the camera. The lens I shoot most with is twice the cost of the camera.

Pete, the pic of Dumont with the A-10 (warthog) was shot with a little Canon S3IS 6MP ($350) and does video also. Anyway, See ya Pres weekend.

  14. had a freakn blow out on my toy hauler. Fu@k up my dimond plate, one wall support and put a 3" diam hole in the fn floor. What is a good tire to buy?225/75/15, trip axle(33'fury bumper tow)

Stay away from Carlisle. What brand was the blow out? I had 2 Carlisle and 2 Towmasters installed and less than a year both Carlisle tires failed and replaced and witin a year failed again and the Towmaster tires still had 3/4 of the tread left. Americas Tire/Discount Tire has a bonded road hazard warranty with 100% free replacement if it blows or unrepairable. My last 4 tires cost $12, the then price for the bonded warranty. My brother had a trailer less than a year old and had a blowout going to Dumont, called me and I said if it's a Carlisle (it was) check the other 3 and they had the tread starting to separate, the tread separation bulge.

  15. Alright for those of you that have these lights I have a question.... would someone try to fire them with a ATC 70. I have an idea but I am not sure it will pan out, and the 70 being able to run them is the key. I think that at a rev the light will fire , you just need to keep the revs up till the like is up to temp. and then you should be able to let off the throttle.

should this experiment work, I will take my idea further! :flipoff:

    thanks for the help!

You MUST have 12DC power, all atvs, quads and bikes have stators and all stators are AC, all auto Alternators are AC, hence the name, or they would be generators (DC). A rechargeable battery pack or cell or install a full wave bridge rectifier/regulator and battery. No magic wands. When I put an HID on my LT 500 I had plenty of power with super sized light coils I made but had to add the rectifier/regulator and battery.

  16. LOL, good ones RC! I know you have the answers so tell me if I got any right

  17. I like it. What did you use? Aperature? Photoshop? I should send you the High Res Raw file for the tweaks.

Nothing exotic, just old Elements 4 and 1 called Picture Window Pro. Adjusted light levels (lightened the shadows and darkened the highlights a little)in Elements, bumped up the saturation a little and unmask sharpen (2 pixel radius and a 5 on threshold) in PWP, that's it.

  18. That pic was off to the right hand side of comp hill near the corner. I rotated 90 degrees looking back towards banshee hill and shot this one. Behind me was blue skys and sun. Straight ahead was this pure black clouds and wind blowing like crazy. The pictures dont capture how bad those storm clouds looked being there. I was ready to race back to camp but it never did rain. Just looked like it was going to.

  19. Those satellites look back in time? I know approx what time they took it. Insurance already settles on the car and the check is in the bank. Waiting on homeowners to settle on my tools and crap inside of the trailer(no other insurance)

So far so good with the insurance company's

    Capt

I don't have access to date specific images but alot of the data is new and didn't expect to see your stuff specifically but for other off-road related. A dude tried to steal my truck and I had a hard time tracking footprints after record winds but remembered once seeing a truck like mine (69 F250) on the next street. Went there and found the exact same shoe prints all over. I tracked my stolen dirt bike for at least ten miles and got it back the 2nd day so any lead is better than none. So your LT car had insurance and misc covered by home ins and trailer had no ins ... you better buy a lotto ticket while your luck is good. I still say it's somebody or their friends that are close. Get a hitch lock too. Good deal
