New Guy looking for Dumont tips

Hello everyone,

I just joined and was looking for any helpful info you could share about Dumont. I have been once about twenty years ago, but I assume quite a bit has changed except for the sand. I am a frequent Glamis goer but looking for a change of scenery.

Questions:

Where would be the best place for a 40 foot diesel pusher pulling a 20 foot enclosed trailer? I do not wish to sink and I am not looking for the noisy crowd (ie. where do the old people park. HA!)?

I'm planning on going Halloween (yes, trial by fire). Will the crowd size be insane or just more crowded than usual (not that I know what that is either)? Keep in mind I am used to Glamis crowds. I plan on arriving Thursday around noon.

Do they still check the bikes on the trailers for spark arrestors? They did this twenty years ago.

Thanks for any help.

Welcome!!! :banghead:

We have been going to dumont for 5 years now... There are many other people here that have been going much longer..

Sounds like your rig is heavy. I have seen many pusher rigs in the flats. The closer you get to the dunes or the fingers the more you may sink. If you drive up the hill past the pay station you will pass the BLM/Sheriff area to your right... Turn left any drive along the edge of the flats. Its far enough away to not get stuck as easy and your away from most of the dust and madness.. This area is more hard pack than sand.

Last year at Halloween we noticed that the croud was not as bad as the last few years. It was crouded but you could get around much easyer.

As for checking your bikes at the enterance... We have never been checked there or any where in Dumont.. All our bikes/quads are legal.

Hope this helps..

First of all welcome to the site!

They do not check for spark arrestors unless you get stopped for another violation and they really want to mess with you.

Since I am an old guy with a 40' pusher and a big trailer I will tell you that you want to come in your first time before nightfall. Although I have not been out this year and don't know the condition of the flats my suggestion would be once you get up top past the heli pad look to the left. Go down the main road aways till you get near bathroom #10. Look for the rocky ridges that run out to the left, get on one and try to stay on it. Watch for soft spots and remember speed can be your friend. If you have to go through a wash look it over even walk it then go like hell! Out past bathroom #9 is usually a little quieter than closer to the dunes but you have to take it easy with your toys as there rocks and they can be hard on paddles. But the nice thing is that it tends to slow some people down, not all but some.

You are going on what I consider to be the craziest weekend at dumont, everybody has been waiting for the season and it seems that a lot of them become partilly "nuts". As you can tell I am old and liked it much better many years ago but it is still fun I just don't go on Holiday weekends.

I understand that the dunes have not smoothed out yet and there are lots of razors(typical) for Dumont and lots of witches eyes(unusual) at dumont. Be safe and see if you can hook up with someone else from the site to give you a tour. Good luck and good duning!

Welcome, I am an old fart just started going to Dumont a year ago. Per my friends I would stay on the flats. None of my bikes have been checked for a spark arrestor (they do have them). One thing I can tell you is the people I have ran into (at Dumont) and on this site are and have been very helpful. I take my boy's out and have had great times even at the big dunes, we try to get a finger for the kids and they ride all day long. Arriving Wed. hopefully by bathroom three (finger,Look for the Laker flag ). Hope that helps, one old fart to another LOL.
