UPDATE: Highway 127 will reopen soon with flagging operations

Monday, December 4 the Baker to Dumont/ Tecopa route will be re-opened with flagging operations in place from Monday through Sunday. This is a 24-hour flagging operation, with piloting to direct traffic in both directions. Flagging operations will continue as needed due to severe undermined roadways and to allow for environmental mitigation operations to continue. The repair work is expected to continue through early spring 2024. The re-opening and repair timeline is weather and material dependent.

Crews will be on location performing base paving to allow for traffic flagging with escorts in place. Please adhere to all road signage and operations and wait for the piloting vehicle to direct your route. Expect traffic delays, flagging may take up to 30-40 minutes per direction. This is a 24-hour flagging operation from Monday through Sunday.

Starting December 4, all traffic will be provided access through SR-127 from Baker to Tecopa via

escorting only. Drivers, please proceed cautiously through the area as repair work will continue in the shoulders and lanes. Please adhere to road closure signage to allow for safe transport of equipment and crews. Consider taking alternate routes to avoid expected flagging delays.

Drivers, please adhere to signage placed ahead of work areas to alert the public about roadwork ahead. Flagging operations may occur on holidays, as required, to continue with scheduled repair operations. Consider taking alternate routes to avoid delays. Work is all weather and material dependent.

Previous updates...

The north-side of highway 127 to Dumont Dunes Rd. has been reopened (from Pahrump, Shoshone, or Tecopa). The route from Baker is still closed and will remain closed during repairs for an undetermined amount of time. It will likely December or later before that stretch of the highway gets reopened. If you are coming from Baker, you will have to go to Vegas then through Pahrump or Tecopa to get to Dumont Dunes. This will add 2-3 hours to your trip.

Additional details:

SAN BERNARDINO, CA – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) continues $9M emergency work on State Route 127 (SR-127) to repair roadbed, pavement, backfill shoulders, armor erosion embankments, repair drainage, remove debris and address other structural damage sustained by recent monsoon storms.

Contractor crews are in the area clearing debris, performing roadbed repair, drainage repair and various other recovery efforts. At this time, the north-side only of the route from County Line to Dumont Dunes Rd. has reopened. The route remains fully closed in both directions, just south of Dumont Dunes Rd. due to severe undermined roadways and to allow for environmental mitigation operations to continue. The timeframe of a full route reopening remains to be determined. Emergency repair work is expected to continue through spring 2024.

Please adhere to road closure signage to allow for safe transport of equipment and crews. Together with partner agencies, Caltrans continues working to determine a full route re-opening as soon as possible, with safety in mind.

Little Dumont

There will be zero access to Little Dumont via SR127. The only way to get there is through the dunes from the main camp area at Dumont.

Hi, this is Paul from Mojave Mining Company & Tecopa Hot Springs Campground & Pools. Not sure if dunes  are open. Haven't talked to BLM. We do have access as a mining company and it is bad, bad at Little Dumont. If Dumont is going to be open only through Sperry Wash access, we have camping at  https://tecopahotspringscampground.com and a 2 acre lot with 24 hr surveillance just off of Furnace Creek Road north of Old Spanish trail for parking  of OHV trailers an launch point for OHV. We are putting this together as a contingency plan. Would like to work with you guys to put a plan together that works for Tecopa and the Dunes. This is devastating to our business as well. Contact me at ptbarnes@mojaveminingcompany.com   Thanks!

I'm a road worker here in Nevada (Clark County)

I was going to visit that small road shop in Shoeshone to see what the plan was. Now I don't have to!

That's some serious road damage. Not enough road crews to fix quickly. We are still repairing road damage in Las Vegas and I don't think we were hit as hard as California was hit.

There are no legal routes from Tecopa for OHV’s to Dumont.  If you camp there, you will have to trailer them past China Date Ranch access road to be legal.  There is actually no legal routes to any designated OHV legal trail/road from Tecopa.

So Sperry to Dumont from Western Talc is in decent shape. Some route finding, washouts, and a little water. Rangers were at the dunes, checking for helmets, reg, etc. Nice ride. If you did Sperry before, it's def worth a trip.

Let me get this straight.  little to no access to the dunes but Rangers were there making a buck on helmet tickets?  For the love of God.

I am a land owner out in the closed section of Hwy 127 and have interfaced with Cal Trans and CHP quite a bit for access to my property. Something important to share here is that Cal Trans is definitely working on the road and a whole lot more than just by the Little Dunes. From 10 miles north of Baker they are now starting to grind the road surface and will be adding a 2 ft paved shoulder in addition to resurfacing the damaged road from there to Dumont. CHP is enforcing the closure 24/7 lately and there is a lot of construction equipment, people and haul trucks moving up and down that road for the repair so keep clear. The GOOD news I heard directly from Cal Trans is that they have a "mandate" to get the road open by Feb 15, 2024. Now that may involve one way traffic in a section here or there but it is at least some good news that access up and down that section of hwy is only several months away.
