  1. What a perfect low key Dumont trip! Mike and I headed out Thursday evening after work for a weekend with friends in the sand. We arrived, unloaded and hung out until midnight waiting for those that were arriving on Thursday night, the rest of the group was to arrived at various times of the day Friday.

The wind had kicked up just as we were heading to bed.

It was a long night for me, as I have a sick old lady dog, that was up most of the night, and I finally called in the sleep towel as the sun was just breaking the pre dawn light. As the sun was lighting up the dunes, it was clear that the night time winds, had groomed the dunes of all the Halloween traffic. The finger dune we were camped next to, was topped off with a HUGE blow sand shelf! YES!!!! May as well start the coffee and kick back with a movie until Mike gets up and I start breakfast. This just means early into the dunes, longer day and a nap when the shadows make dune time sucky.

Our first ride out, with in maybe 5 minutes, our leader drops off a hard to see out of no place shelf, on the radio, I here drop off, he looks back to make sure everyone is checking up and goes right off another steeper one. On the radio, stop stop stop! There's another one, my A arm is bent! You guys go on, I'll limp back to camp. We make sure he and his passenger are ok, and heading back on the flats. We cruise through the big dunes behind comp. There are shelves and drop off every where. It is summer dune conditions in November! So far it's a weird dune season, end of season dunes in early October and now summer dune conditions two weeks after a huge holiday weekend! No complaining here!  We go up and across comp, drop down onto the flats, back up into the lower dunes, Mike is not quite running right. Back to camp, we need to check on the others, see how much damage is done to that A arm. Back at camp, the phone calls start, anyone have a spare A arm, that is coming out? Why yes! Great! We hang out and visit for a while, check in with those coming out today, and most of us head back out on another dune rally. We had to stop and in true duner helping duner fashion, to help out a fellow duner who's group had left him stranded and stuck in the sand. We continued on and a what a great run it was! Stopping to hang out at the North Pole, we all were soon getting hungry for lunch. So we made our way back to camp. More visiting, more waiting for others to arrive. Soon the A arm arrived and it was time for repairs as the rest of our group started to arrived and complete our small little circle of friends. Everyone was getting ready to head out on another ride, but for me it was time to catch up on some much needed sleep. Plus, if my old dog had a night, like the last one, I would need my rest. I turned on the TV, curled up and asked to wake me up for the sunset cruise. With the puffy high clouds, it was gearing up to be a great sunset. But, when it came time, I was sound asleep. Happily Mike left me alone, but I woke up and caught the last of the waning sunset. Time for fire and our hauler guests to arrive. They were arriving a bit earlier then anticipated, so we held off dinner, but they had already eaten, so dinner and gathering around the fire. It was an early night.

Thankfully my dog slept through the night, must have been all that fire play and dune running. I was still up with the sunrise. Coffee brewing and our guests made breakfast. Bloody Mary to get the morning started while everyone gathered before the dune rally's started. And it was a great Saturday, filled with rally after rally after rally! Break for lunch and waiting for the shadows, we gathered and talked hanging out and enjoying the company. What great company to be surrounded by. After relaxing and waiting for the shadows, it was back to rally, rally, rally! We covered every inch of those dunes. Dinner and campfire and the fights on a TV on a chair next to the fire to complete the night.

Up with the sun again. We needed one more ride, before packing up to leave. And what a ride it was! 15 SxS's lined up to rally through the sand, behind one of the best leaders Dumont has to offer up. He covered the entire dunes, well almost, making sure each and every one of those 15 SxS's made it to the ending point all at the same time! It was a great rally, wheelies, jumps, side hills, razor transitions, this rally had it all, at the perfect pace. We come to completion at the North Pole and visit for a few, before someone finally said, well, it's time we head back to start packing up, no one wanted the trip to come to an end. On the way back, one of the group launched a little to bit and bent a radius rod. Surprise surprise, some one had one back at camp! This group was great and prepared! After the repairs, we completed the rally back to camp, it was time to pack up and put an end to a pretty perfect weekend.

A great time was had by all, the break downs were all minor and repairable, the weather was perfection, the dune rally's fast and long, the company was fantastic! The crowds were light! A great weekend in the sand!

Some random photos, compiled with everyone's phone shot's. In no particular order...

  2. I think that that big camp that completely took over bathroom #4 and part of Vendor Row maybe didn't help the space that they wanted to use. I was under the understanding that unless you were a vendor, you couldn't camp on Vendor Row and take over an entire bathroom. But that is an entire other issue...

I heard a bunch of good things and it was a first time event, you can't expect perfect. Maybe next year,  come in a bit early in the week and rope off that area off, by bathroom #4, for a designated area? With plenty of place to park vehicles. You could do a vehicle parade down Vendor Row after the trunk or treat part? I think it's a great idea @JeepingJay36 thank you for all your effort in putting this together.

Jason, let me know if you want any help putting anything together next year. Or for other events. Now that I'm not committed to Vendor Row, I would be happy to help any way I can. I used to help with the Clean Up and Poker Run events all the time.

  3. This was GTP Off Road's last trip out on Vendor Row and the rumor that I heard was that the other small parts truck was done as well (But I am just repeating hearsay)

BLM has gotten stricter on what can and can not be sold on Vendor Row. It has affected several vendor's businesses.

The guys that bought the old Beefy Boys food truck ( they haven't decided on a name yet) did a tremendous job on their first trip out! Their food was good, good sized portions at a great price. I hope they are just as supported as Beefy Boys was in the past!

There were numerous vendor's missing from the past years. Hog Heaven hasn't returned for the last two years. Grandpa's Ice cream disappeared two years ago, as well as a couple of shirt groups, including Racin Dirty and Big Belly Crew. I remember back in the days when Vendor Row was full on both sides....

Vendor row seems to be dying more and more every year...

Maybe that Amazon Drone Delivery Service will hurry up and get Dumont on it's area...  :laughing: (sarcasm)

It is a ton of work just to make it to vendor row and then when you are out there, you are working from sun up, to well after sun down. Set up, tear down and helping customers.

    This year the missing included:

    The Short Bus Ice Cream

    For Life t shirts

    SPK Offroad

Jerico something, they sold a variety of items, flags, lights, t-shirts

The RV Rental and T-Shirt place

The only vendor's this year were:

GTP Off Road (last time, we are done vending)

    DuneMart

    California Casuals

    Desert Bling

Baker Ice which now owns the old Beefy Boys truck

Another ice truck, but they were intermittent

    Dirty Mindz

    and

the curly fries and corn dogs place (I don't know their name)

As for GTP Off Road, it takes a tremendous amount of work to go out there and vend. They have to break down the entire show room and load it into the trailer, haul it out there, in years past, either Mike or Adam would have to make two trips, just to get the vending trailer to the dunes, this year, I was able to drive it out. Then unload everything and reset up the show room when they return. They have to turn work away the week before any vending trip, just to get ready. GTP Off Road is a two person small business (I only help out and have a full time job.) The guys are wanting to concentrate their time on more shop work, improving further their customer service, product inventory and turn around time in the shop, getting rides ready for those big holiday weekends.

My own personal opinion, and not the opinion of GTP Off Road (I am only a hired hand)

There were numerous trips where we spent  more of our time out on vendor row watching people walk by, then helping people out. We are duners ourselves and truly enjoyed being able to save people's weekends and be there when they needed us. That was where the joy was in it, duners helping duners. If we weren't vending, we would have been duning. They did not excessively mark up their prices just because they were on vendor row, they kept their prices the same as in town.  I heard it frequently,  "buy it in town or on amazon, the prices are over marked just because they are out here." If the vendors aren't supported, they won't keep coming. They can't stock every nut and bolt and part, and bring it out, they wished they could have, but it's impossible. I hope that another parts person or operation steps up and fills in the gap.

  4. Yeah I renew mine yearly, since I camp and backpack in CA frequently and its required. It's basic common knowledge. As long as one person has one in your camp, you should be covered. Both Mike and myself have one, just in case.... I know people are saying you don't need one in Dumont, but just keeping my butt covered. No harm in tossing a copy in the hauler ;)

What about a day ride to the Date Farm or the Brewery in Tecopa, is that possible or not really

The date farm is not a good idea, since they use the money they make to attempt to keep us duners out of Dumont. @ynot can give you more information.

@Landsandcrab you had a post awhile back about exploring the area around Dumont not in the sand, maybe you can give more information?? If I remember right it was a great post.

  6. What a perfect weekend in the sandbox!

We headed out Friday afternoon after a half day of work. We couldn't wait to get back into the home dune sand box. We love our summer dunes, but there's nothing like having sandticipation for the going home to dunes that are just a few hours away. We arrived at 4:45 PM and couldn't wait to shred some sand!

As soon as we rolled in we dropped the door and headed out to check it out. The dunes were PERFECT! No tracks, ripples and rollers! Our friend thought Mike and I were going to have a dunegasum on the radio and as we talked back and forth about how EPIC they were, repeatedly!

We had a nice small little camp of friends and friendsamily.

The W kicked up on Saturday and cleaned up all of the tracks we had laid the night before.

Our friends had their Can Am Max out in the sand for the first time, his first time driving in the sand EVER! And only his 3rd time in the driver's seat of an off road vehicle! And he WHEELIED THE MAX!!!!!!! Our other friend had his X3 out for it's maiden voyage, so Mike had his teacher hat on and we spent the weekend easy breezy cruising, and finding jump and wheelie spots when the sun was directly over head. While we were out playing, we saw a Max tip over, so in true duner fashion we rolled up, made sure they were ok and got her back up right. She had never driven in the sand before and had tried to make a tight fast turn, so we gave her some pointers and she was on her way.

We made the usual epic sunset cocktail run to the north pole slicing through the dunes like butter. We hung out and watched the sun set before heading back to camp for dinner and the first campfire of the season! It's not officially a season starter, until there's a camp fire!

Up early, before sunrise, for breakfast and one last dune run, before packing up and heading home.

The dunes were perfectly AH-Mazing!! Couldn't ask for better conditions. It was so nice to get in a play weekend, before they get all tore up by the masses!

    Some pics from the weekend.

  7. Heading out Wednesday through Sunday. GTP Off Road will be set up on Vendor Row. I believe this will be our ONLY vending trip of the season this year. We'll be having a massive blow out sale on most of our vending wears, jersey's, gloves, bags, some accessories, etc... We'll have the usual tires, wheels, axles and such as well. However this may be our last vending trip ever, so we are wanting to move some of the items out of inventory.

  8. I am oh so ready!!! It's going to be nice to be able to leave work on a Friday evening and jet out to the dunes for a quick weekend! They started locking down days off, so my summer dunes have been few. One last trip to Little Sahara the last week of September and our first trip is planned for the 13th of October.

  9. It's time to start reading the other dunes section... lol... I know I'll be posting another trip report from Little Sahara Dunes in Utah! Some of us dune all year long, it's just time to go north.
