dreamrr
My laptop just stopped working. So I need to get a new one! I am seriously considering getting an Apple Laptop. I am kind of worried because I have never had a Mac before. But I have heard that they run faster, get less viruses, and are great with videos and stuff. What do you think? Should I get an Apple? Or do you recommend anything else? Thanks!
desertskyz
I'm gonna have to jump in on this. Mac's are the only way to go. They take alittle getting used to but in the long run you will love it . One you go Mac you'll never go Back I am accustom to using both platforms and my PC is OK but you gotta worry about viruses all the dame time I have had Mac's for 17 years and NEVER once had a virus. I think it's the Fire Wall....
dreamrr
The only thing I worry about is compatibility. If I want to use another computer, say at work, and save the work to a flash drive, will I be able to open it on the Mac. Or if someone sends me an e-mail with an excel or word file, will I be able to open it?
cycoguy
Mac's are too confusing for my simple mind, when I use my friends, I always have to have him show me up to click to even start the internet up...lol I dont worry about viruses with my PC's I have geek squad take care of all that! Premium Malt
Stop downloading the donkey porn and you wont have to worry about viruses Macs are no good. If you have used a pc all you life dont switch. MS Office is a common office suite for the mac and it is cross compatable. All of my internet stuff works fine too - even the porn. I think the porn is even better on the MAC as the screen is great on them. I have been a windows user since day one, but I have a MAC at home and it rocks - everything just seems to work on it.... desertskyz
Again! I NEVER have a problem opening anything. I also run MS office. Things just look different. You will rarely here Mac people bash PC people. Because we have to knowledge to work both platforms. PC people just don't get it. It will be different at first and if you run Tiger as you Operating System. It is Bada$$ Just go check it out and play with alittle at the store. EY3BA11
Office and neo office are cross compatible so you will have no problems opening documents... .Samaba with filesharing is easy on a mac so getting hooked up to the network to steal porn from the other office computers isnt that bad. THEY ARE DIFFRENT... if your not a fan of change and have a hard time figuring things out you will hate it. THey are good for what they are none the less... but they will seem like you have to learn a whole new language to use them so it takes time. Personally... id get another windows machine.. I love my dell lol

iweb
My father in law has had Mac for years and he has always had problems with software, wireless connections, etc working and I can't help him when he has problems since I am pc and I just don't understand his Mac. There used to be a Mac user group here he could get help from but now they are gone so he can't get his stuff to work right and he couldn't even get wireless internet to work in SLC on his laptop. I also love my Dell and it picks up internet by dreamrr's cabin in Duck Creek!

SandBox_Kid
*nix isnt too user friendly It is now. I sat in a Q and A session here at work for SLED (Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop) and they went to market with a product that has the same "look and feel" as Vista....and released way before Vista! Looks just like windows to me.... Not to mention OpenOffice is free and will be portable to and from Office by the end of the year!
EY3BA11
Its already portable... BUT try doing any hardware maint on that bugger. Try learning the file systems... try installing software for it.. People go wtf is a tar.gz file i have to compile WHAT!! I know that it has gotten alot easier but it still doesnt have the same user friendly features like its competitors. I use ubuntu with XFCE for desktop management and love it.. but try and install that bugger from a noobs point of view aint happenin. dreamrr
Looks like my hard drive crashed on my laptop. It sucks that I lost everything. So I think I am just going to replace it. I may still get a Mac, but who knows. Thanks for all of the input people!

I know a guy who put his hard drive in the freezer (in a baggy) then plugged it in while cold...he had enough time to copy everything over to a portable drive. On another note, if the data is important there are data recovery companies that can "attempt" to recover the data. It's usually not cheap though. Eventhough he recovered the data after being in that enviroment, I would have to say that that is far from ideal - Taking a electronic piece from direct cold to warm will cause an instant build up of moisture/condinsation.... When most peoples drives "crash", they really dont have a major fault - but an issue with a couple of sectors within the boot/OS. Sectors go bad pretty regulary, but the OS just moves the data from the bad part, adds the section/sector to the drive cache and then the drive uses this information to not store any info to this sector number again. When condition is right, the new file moved to a new section does not get written fully and/or just cant be moved(Some stuff needs to be in one area only within the drive). So the drive probally has about a 98% chance that the info can be transferred by everyday means....

dreamrr
I didn't have anything really important on the computer, except pictures. It kind of sucks, with technology these days I dont actually develop many pictures anymore. I just store them on the computer. Looks like I need to find another form of backup. Lots of memories are gone now Who knows, I may get lucky and recover the pictures

Both him and I work in a fairly large IT shop and this wasn't our first day at the rodeo, if you know what I mean. This was a last ditch effort at recovering the data, and in my opinion, was as close to "ideal" as you can get.
