tire numbers and their meanings.

there are three numbers on the tire sizes for the metrics...

xxx/yy/zz

here is my understanding of them

xxx= the width of the tread

yy= the aspect ratio...or the percent of the width that the sidewall is tall from the rim to the tread

zz= the rim size

my friend is of the opinion that the xxx is how tall the tire is, where the yy is how wide it is

who is right?

Now, if you have a big offroad tire, like a 31 10.50 15, then, I would say your buddy is correct. 31 inches tall, 10 1/2 inches wide, 15 inch diameter. You both are correct. Depending on what tires you are discussing.

I have 286/65/R18 which is 32.5/10.5/R18 So maybe we should say when using the metric system?
