  1. The new 08 Rhino CDI is scheduled to be released May 23rd according to Dynatek. The New CDI will have standard features that will perform like the 660 Rhino CDI, raising the rev limit to 8000 and removing the forward and reverse speed limiter. It it also a programmable unit which will allow for more advanced features and with remote serial programmer it will also allow the adjustment of the fuel curve. Dynatek has orders for more than 2000 of these units; 1000 which according to Dynatek will be released on May 23rd and another 1000 the middle of June. I know it is just "farm equipment" however with this release it will make it really fast farm equipment. For more info on the photos / tech of this CDI Click!
  2. A friend of mine just showed me this thread, saying he saw a video of the Rhino we built for Don and Ellen. I was surprised a few people were bashing it. I would just like to say, this is Don's personal machine. He bought it and paid for it out of his own money and uses it for the good of the duners he has to haul out when no one else is around. On Most days he is using it to clean the crapers, something most people take for granted. On the off weekends there is no one around as far as EMS goes; usually you have only one ranger for a hundred miles. During these times a rescue (Read Ambulance) shows up from Baker Ca. One of our friends who died out there, his wife was waiting for 5 or 6 hours for someone "official" to show up. This unfortunately was after Don left at the end of the season. Don came to me and asked us to build him something that he could deliver and transport patients out at Dumont, especially during the off holidays weekends and during the week when the Calvary is nowhere to be found. Having transported a few patients myself in my rhino we decided to use our limited resources to build him one at no charge. We designed it to carry a patient securely and at low speeds. Running rescue for more than 20 years, the only time we go code with a patient if CPR is in progress or if the patient is critical. If the patient has a suspected spine injury, we don’t go haul’n a$$ down Rancho to the Trauma Center. The Rhino will go most anywhere; if it won't go straight up the steepest dunes you go around and come down to the patient. Don has transported a lot of EMS personnel and patients at the dunes and he received none of the entrance fees for doing it. If you’re against taking a ride in the Rhino if you’re injured, pass it up and take the next bus that comes along. For me I'm thankful he was willing to take this on and I think the people he has helped would agree. :6pak:
  3. We have had a lot of failures with aluminum exhausts running with quiet cores out at the dunes. They get too hot. I have not had one fail that I know about running w/o the quiet cores, however my buddy was pulling a jeep and another quad (as fast as he could go) from comp at the same time in his Ranger and blew the side out of his lol Someone said something about the DFR duals being too loud, DFR makes a billet quiet end cap using super trapp defuser rings, I've heard them at the dunes and they seem to work pretty well. I have not used them as that is music to my ears. :shocked2: Looney tuned, who makes the DFR dual now also has got rid the aluminum exhaust flange that connect the head pipe to the head. (you may have to request this when you order from them) The aluminum was getting hot and warping and causing the exhaust to come loose. We have also asked Two Bros to get rid of the Aluminum Flange as well. We will see what happens.
  4. You have to use more than weights. The guys over at EPI are the guru's of clutching CVT's. They can make the belts last longer however top end suffers something that is not desirable in the sand. They use different helixes springs and weights. Trying to get more RPM to the wheels for the dunes means more stress on the belts. That’s what Ricks RR needs. Using the factory or Dayco (Carlisle) belt won't hold up. The EPI severe duty belt is better but I don't know how much better. I have not received any feedback from the RZR or Ranger folks I've sold them to. Since I sold only a few Dayco (Carlise) belts and started getting complaints I assume this is a good thing as far as the EPI belt goes. (In The Rhino, the Dayco (Carlisle) belts will fail in 3 days at the dunes when riding hard. I have been running the EPI on my Rhino for 2 seasons with Big Bore Kit and NOS and it still appears to be good. My friend, who has the RR that said the EPI belt failed, is now not sure what belt he has in it. He now says it could be the EPI that still in it. EPI sells 3 belts, the Severe Duty belt made in Japan the Super duty and the Standard. I've only used the Severe Duty belt as they are supposed to be a 100 HP belt. As far as my Rhino goes the EPI belt made a believer out of me.
  5. I'll let rick know so he can see if they have a fix for his. We wre thinking of sending the clutch to EPI and seeing what they can do with it.
  6. Those things are really nice looking machines, fun to drive. My friend also has one with the Polaris 700 in it. He is not real happy with the performance at the dunes but his wife loves it. We just talked about it the other day because it keeps blowing belts, even the EPI belt which is built for 100 HP snow machines. If we stick a clutch kit in it we can get it to stop blowing belts but the top end will suffer. I don't think there would be any issues with it on the trails but we both think for the dunes it would of been better if it was as a 4WD. Since it is a 2 WD it needs more wheel spin for climbing in the dunes, but clutching it for more top end will only make the drive belt blow more often. Did they stick a different motor in the new models? My friends RR won't do 75.
  7. Nice! :argue: For the dirt you want to protect you rim, however you can adjust your pressures for ride quality / topend / traction. More pressure will give you rim protection and topend, less will give you smoother ride and more traction. For the dune stars you can adjust the tire pressure the same way to suit the RZR. More pressure will have more slip but can make more RPM and less pressure less slip and rpm. For my Rhino, I place 1 tire between the 2 paddles air down until I get a very slight bludge in the side wall. (very slight!) and match all the rest of the tires to that pressure. For me I think it is about 4-4.5 pounds. Play with the pressures until you find what works best for you. Enjoy!
  8. Was it a dual or a single and did you have quiet cores installed?
  9. Everyone needs this Earth First T-Shirt The front reads Earth First! The back reads We Will Drill The Rest Of The Planets Later A friend of mine has this shirt, he is a gas well driller in Wyoming
  10. I know! We can have a mass throat cutting, but only after we dig the grave by hand, in an open area where no endangered plants or bugs live. (Does that little piece of heaven even exist?) Those of you left, please cover our grave by hand tools, use a flat rock as making steel causes harm. No evil oil powered equipment as we don't want to make the oil companies or George Bush and his cronies any money. In death we don't want to be a burden on mother earth.
  11. I got a link from a customer about a ecological quiz. I took the quiz for amusement. Basically the quiz said If everyone lived like I do, We would need 6.5 planets. (I took the Quiz like I was Al Gore, using Al Gore friendly answers too and he needs 12.5 planets) It was only after taking the quiz like a evowack-nutjob azzhat did I feel the need to cut my throat. If you live like a nut job we will still need 1.1 planets. 1. How often do you eat animal based products? (beef, pork, chicken, fish, eggs, dairy products) Never (vegan) 2. How much of the food that you eat is processed, packaged and not locally grown (from more than 200 miles away)? Very little. Most of the food I eat is unprocessed, unpackaged and locally grown. 3. Compared to people in your neighborhood, how much waste do you generate? Much less 4. How many people live in your household? 3 people 5. What is the size of your home? 500-1000 square feet 6. Which housing type best describes your home? Green-design residence 7. Do you have electricity in your home? Yes, with energy conservation and efficiency 8. On average, how far do you travel on public transportation each week (bus, train, subway or ferry) ? 25-75 miles 9. On average, how far do you go by motorbike each week (as a driver or passenger)? 0 miles 10. On average, how far do you go by car each week (as a driver or passenger)? 0 miles 11. Do you bicycle, walk, or use animal power to get around? Most of the time 12. Approximately how many hours do you spend flying each year? Never fly Quiz Results: IN COMPARISON, THE AVERAGE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IN YOUR COUNTRY IS 24 ACRES PER PERSON. WORLDWIDE, THERE EXIST 4.5 BIOLOGICALLY PRODUCTIVE ACRES PER PERSON. IF EVERYONE LIVED LIKE YOU, WE WOULD NEED 1.1 PLANETS. http://www.earthday.net/footprint/info.asp I think I'll fax this over to Google
  12. Google has been involved in a few things that I don't like, however this is kinda the final straw. 80% of all searches start with google, i hope I can do without them.
  13. Google has teamed up with Environmental Activists To Flood Congress With 1 Million Phone Calls To Congress In Support Some Unknown Agenda. Environmentalist are constantly trying to get riding areas closed down using junk science and it is direct conflict with the sport we all enjoy. Extreme Outdoors supports being a good steward to the environment however we also believe there is room for everyone on this planet and everyone should be able to enjoy our public lands. We are just small fish in the pond, however in protest of Google’s support of extremist, we will be suspending our Google ad words advertising account. This account is worth about 3,000.00 per month in revenue to Google. We ask that you join us and stop using Google for your searches. If you are so inclined, Google can be reached at: 1600 Amphitheatre Pkwy. Mountain View, CA 94043 Phone: 650-253-0000 Fax: 650-253-0001 I asked them if they would be willing to donate to FODD and the ASA to help keep our current riding area open. I got a big silence followed by a "I'll forward your request" Craig
  14. Thats true, but they don't give tickets (that I know of) just for having it installed.
  15. We tested a set of Dune Stars on a stock Ranger 700 XP a few years ago. We did a straight up comp test, we did not go up sideways and it made it up 3/4 of the way. We had to air the tires down to about 3.5 pounds to climb comp as well. The owner who tested them was happy with the performance in the smaller dunes, but we were not impressed with comp. The Ranger does not have enough power for steep stuff. Craig
  16. We have had excellent reports from people using the 4 tire itp dune star on the RZR. We have sold many dune star kits and no one has called to comlain about the performance. One of our customers gave us a complete report on the dune stars a month or so ago on his stock RZR and they rocked. He went against the rear paddle and smoothie front, the stock tires, terracross and others and not one could out climb him or hang with him running in the bowls. I don’t know why one would not want the option to use the 4wd as a smoothie will not pull you up the hill as much as a front paddle. We built the Rescue Rhino and Don was out climbing Jim’s RZR until Jim got a set Halloween. On my Rhino I have yet to see a smoothie setup out climb me. I had a friend with the front smoothie setup in his Polaris 700 Powered Ridge Runner, if I was in 2wd he would win. If I was in 4wd I would win. I just had more traction. Motor revs can be controlled by the amount of air you have in the tire. The Tires are 2 ply and while they are not shaved, they hold up better in the rocks getting to and from the dunes. I'm on my 3rd season with the same tires and no flats. I'm always in 2WD unless I’m climbing comp or olds. I can climb olds in 2wd with the speedo reading over 30 MPH, but I can climb twice as fast in 4wd even though the speedo is reading less. IMHO I think it is a great tire http://www.xopco.com/OldsmobileHill-HR.wmv Craig
  17. Don the volunteer at Dumont told me the other day he has heard from other duners over at Glamis that the BLM is ticketing side x sides for having rear seats even if there is no one in them. I have no way of knowing how accurate this is. Don kinda gave the impression it will be happening at Dumont in the future. I can see them having the ability to do this if there is someone in the rear seat, but if no one is sitting in the seat, I don't see how they can get away with it. Does anyone else have any more info on this? Craig
  18. I'm glad it worked for you. Good 'ol duct tape... Don't leave home without it
  19. Where are you located? I'd like to get my hands on one. Need to measure the cage and bumpers and a general look over.
  20. Here are a few things we have found in the past few years that can leave you scratching your head and your running around looking for a carb or a CDI. We just had a Canadian customer call looking for a new or used carb for his 07 Rhino. He rebuilt the carb, cleaned the fuel tank, the filter and installed his buddy’s carb on his rhino as last resort. Only with the borrowed carb would the Rhino run. Convinced he had a bad carb he called and I just could not believe the carb was bad. After that I decided to post this message for all to maybe help you fix a few simple things before you the darn thing. The 1st thing you want to check is the fuel filter. One of the symptoms of a clogged fuel filter is, It starts and idles and will even run wide open for a few then the engine starts cutting out. This has been the majority of the problems out at the dunes. We replace a lot of fuel filters out there. The choke connection at the carb is another problem. The Rhino may or may not start, will probably start with the choke on but when you hit the gas it will die. This was our Canadians friends’ problem. It looked perfect but it was leaking. We tell our customers whenever you work on the carb the 1st and last thing you want to remove and replace is the choke cable where it connects at the carb. This little plastic nut will break if too much force is applied on it, causing a vacuum leak. Besides that we have seen many Rhinos with nothing oblivious wrong with the nut or the o-rings and still the thing leaks. To test this, unscrew the nut, remove the cable end from the carb (Yamaha calls it a starter set part number 5KM-1410A-00-00) and place your finger or call on the ultimate mechanic, good o'l duct tape to help you out. Cover the hole and if this was the problem, your problem should be solved by now. Some of the items I found that make good sense to carry in your tool box, is a fuel filter, starter set (choke cable end) a tie rod end and tie rod. We have seen a lot of these parts break out on the dunes and trails. If all of a sudden after landing a hard one or hitting the rut too hard, your steering is out of wack, it may be one of the tie rod pieces. If the tie rods look good take a close look at the spindles. (Yamaha calls these a Steering knuckle) compare the arms that attach to the tie rods. One of them, and it seems to be the right side more than the left, one arm may be higher than the other. This will cause your steering to be off and out of alignment. You can adjust this out in the field by turning the tie rods, but you need to measure the amount of threads (trust me on this one) too few threads in to the tie rod end and it WILL fall off! The steering knuckle will need to be replaced as it is now weak. By working both sides you can usually get it back into alignment so you can finish your trip. A note on tie rods, Yamaha does not sell tie rods. In order to get tie rods from Yamaha you have to buy the whole steering rack. Frap sells a replacement heavy duty tie rod, and it will screw into the OEM rack, with a savings of about 150.00 in your pocket. Can anyone say beer money!? I hope this will save a few trips when "Craig Law" happens. (Craigs law is Murphy was a lucky mother-)
  21. I don't see any problem there at all. Just check your clearances, as some 10" tires will rub on some polaris models Without a spacer, but I don't think it will be an issue with the stock tire. Usually it hits at the tie rod ends. ITP does not make a wide offset wheel in the 12" for polaris. We keep begging. RZR sand guys will buy them up. ITP does make a 14x8 wide offset rear for the RZR in the SS Alloy 112 wheel, but I have not seen anyone put it on a ranger yet.
  22. I'm running wide offset rear wheels and stock offset front wheels, But it depends on what model you are running as to he offsets available
  23. Yes, Lots of people do it with their side x sides. I run the Terracross 26x9x14's all the way around. A couple of my friends run the Bighorn 26x9x12 and 26x9x14's all theway around. Most of our customers still order the wider tires in the rear, but if you want to save weight that is one way of doing it
