  1. bearfoot, you might want to check on your engine specs, 383's are rutinely 4.030 bore (350 block) with a 400 crank, with a stroke of 3.75 not 4.00 inches. 4.030x 4.00 puts it at about 408. And getting a 4.00 stroke in a 350 block is pretty hard, at 3.875 your into reduced base circle cams, major clearancing for rods, the piston pin into the oil ring etc....and that builds a 396. Nice car BTW.
  2. a search revealed 330-350 people die a year by trauma in clark county. 32% of deaths are by unintentional injury nationwide. as of 2005 2.4 mil people lived in nv with 70% in clark county. Thats 1680000 people and alittle less then 1 dies daily by trauma. I think thats 0.0000005 death rate by trauma. Compared to a big week end at dumont.....guesstamate 30000 people. 1.25 deaths guess (i think on low side) is 0.00004, and if I did it right, thats 80 times more likely to die by trauma at Dumont then if you are the average southern nevadan in town on the same week end. 80 times more dangerous? Its actually more than that cause I used one per day instead of the decimal .9 whatever. It could be even worse, it really depends on how many people are dumont? if its 15000 then its 160 times more dangerous.

Amazing, the other thread turned into a flusher unfortunately. I dont think that was the place for, thats why I started this one, but no real action? Maybe they got it out of there systems already? I said basically the same thing as many have stated in the other thread. A couple braces or gussets in most cars can really change the strenght of them and be the difference. Sandaddict: With the pictures you posted of your car, it appears to be one of the best I ve seen. Its so good that via picture it s hard to tell. I think the occupants pictured would survive a similar incident that spurred this lok into saftey. You have good head room, so if there is failure it has some room still. Im guessing that the people pictured ae all sub 6 ft'ers? They just appear lower in the seat then some. I think the shoulder harness should be raised few inches, but its one of the best I ve seen , and should be measured in person to tell for sure. One reason it may be ok is that the occupants maybe on the shorter side. I d raise them as high as possible for them , and that would make it even safe when a larger person rides with you. I think over all the chassis is very good, lots of head room, front and rear, good bracing etc. Id ad small 45 braces at the top of the a,bc pillars, one to add strenght and two because I think it could be done with out taking away anything from the car, due to it goodhead room already etc. I d x brace the roof, I cant really tell if its done forsure, or atleast put a lid on it. Some dont like the limited vision on a hill with a lid, you can just do the center, then use clear or tinted lexan/plastic on the sides to still have some vision out the roof for siting on steep hills. Basically the car is so good it would need to be seen in person to really tear it appart. Try to pick out a bad seat belt mount, etc.... if you run at night, the light you see with is important, you have some of that handled, but being seen is right up there as well. leds, around the car let us all know where your at. nice one.

Joe, no I dont have a picture , but were did I say I had a perfect car? I believe I commented on the safety compared to the others I was with. ISBB, I can not comment on the decisions or thoughts of TATUM. Since you have the ability to know why other people make decisions can you tell me what my wife is thinking? So why no comments on why all shoulder harness belts are mounted to low ? Im even more surprised that most people just want to argue versus do something constructive like get a few people together and maybe revue peoples cars(who want it) and make suggestions to the set up based on experience, physics, engineering, and other known racing venue technics. No that would make to much sence. Have you guys seen the videos of guys jumping from a tree like 100 ft up with rope tide to there feet? They stop in an instant, some even hit the ground alittle, really amazing that they do it.
  5. its hard to put in perspective though. What are the numbers? 30000 people for 3 days at the dunes resuls in on average 1.75 deaths for the 3 day period? Take any 30000 people in in city in the us for three days and I bet the average death rate due to injury is something like 0.2 or something. If thats the case then yes its very very very very dangerous. You probably have a better chance at being killed at the dunes on a big week end then a cop on on the job any given day. If 3 people did die last weekend ( ultralight not confirmed) but thats a 1 in 10000 shot........thats not good.

On another thread there are two photos of someone towing someone else. The front car, is a four passenger car that needs a lot of work. In almost any serious incident the occupants will be hurt. It has NO b pillar at all, the shoulder harness is mounted so far down it shouldn t even be used cause its more dangerous then not wearing it at all. The cage all four points of mine as well be cut off cause of extra weight, at least if the car is lighter it will react faster and maybe avoid a hit, and then theres the question of what do you wnat to be hit by sand? or a steel bar? 99 % of all sand cars are dangerous to the occupants in some way which is pretty funny considering its sole design purpose is to protect in the enviroment its in. Also strange is that not many people are apparently even interested in saftey.

hard to tell from the photo but a couple things stand out. The A pillar has no brace or gusset. If a 3000lb rail and you meet at the crest of a dune and the 3000lb rail lands on you at say 25 mph is it strong enough not to crush the people in the front? I think it would lay down like an old dog, and a simple brace could really change the integrity of the a pillar. It also appears that the cross bar behind the front seats is far to low which probably holds the upper harness. If it does then the shoulder belts are mounted way too low unless your 4 ft 2 or something. The should belt harness mount should be 90 degrees to the top of the shoulder. Slightly higher is ok as well. But any lower causes spine compression as the belt shortens in impact, causing the occupant to need to be shorter as well, ussually cause disc compression, and thoracic and lumbar back compression fractures of the bone as well. Nice head room though.

I wouldnt expect to walk away from what was described but survive yes. That car had no gusseting, and virtually no bracing on the cage at all. The belts were also mounted way too low esspecially for the impacted. It undoubtly crushed there spines on impact (broke the back between t1 and L5 somewhere probably causng severe cord injury) A good gusset or brace at the a pillar bend would have kept the back from coming down. The front a pillar bent in compression giving the back of the cage a way to fall. A couple inches and no head injury is all it would take. Then all you have to survive is the G's, and sand and belts can suck up enormous high G impacts. The impact was imparted on ther spine by the belts not there lap/pelvis /legs like it should have been. You can do a lot of damage to the pelvis and legs and still survive thats why all the important stuff is protected by ribs. In general sand cars are incedibly UNSAFE because there is no body that governs anything. No inspections, just a salesman telling the buyer its safe. A salesperson that probably didnt build the car himself and probably doesn t have any real knowledge of what is safe. I havnt seen any high end sand car that didnt spend as much time on saftey design as paint scheme design. I bet most car owners can not quote what wall thickness or material there car is made out of. I also bet most dont know the meaning of gusset. Or know how their belt should fit or how to effective use them. Their primary safety device, they probably use incorrectly. Then chassis s'.....
  9. turbo cutting out? Part of the problem may be your description of the problem. That makes no real sence unless there is more to the problem or story. I know dealerships are horrible no argument there but if you have a problem that comes and goes, and for some reason can t decribe the problem accurately how do you expect anyone to fix it? A couple gauges may help you diagnose a problem and tell you a lot on how to alter your driving to get more out of it as well.
  10. The unfortunate crash that killed two did spur this post. I ve made posts in the past though with little or even no comments. I wonder if safety is low on the list or if everyone thnks they are safe? I build cages, race cars for a living. 99% of all sand rails are unsafe in some way. I went halloween weekend with an old chenworth car. In my camp it was by far FAR the safest car. One was a virtually brand new long travel ls1 car too. My wife took a ride in the ls1 car (as have I in the past) and as I followed on my quad all I could think about was "what if" what if they have an incident. They dont need to be going fast or anything to have a small mistake cause a major incident. I wanted my wife out of that car. The car in the crash......has several build problems and design problems that caused the injuries. I dont know how far they fell (30 ft or so according to the story) but I think it should have been completely survivable essecially if they inpacted in sand. Just because it has some bars on top doesnt make it safe. That car was unsafe, or unfinished. No cage should deform like that even if dropped from 30 ft straight up. Its job is to keep its integrity. The belts absorb the inpact with the chassis external to the occupant compartment. The car in the pictures...........1$ in steal could have changed everything. Very very sad. Plan to go over, plan to go over and over and over. Just a note, the last time out the chenworth car I drove was tumbled 5 times, its been over numerous other times in the sand and in the desert. The 5 rolls it took at dumont last time out, didnt even break a bulb. I had to fix a light housing, and straighten a couple others, but it drove away just fine, with no chassis problems at all. If you own a rail and do not have experience or othyer knowledge regarding the design and planning of safety features in your car , get someone who does. Most cars I see have several common theme problems, like the car in the crash. Basically a good car with a few small things either done wrong or not done at all. Even if you take it easy, pan for the worst case , the drunk guy that stole his uncles v8 car and is about to hit you at 75 mph.......or land on top of you, or push you over on a hill for a 30 roll tumble to the bottom. Plan for that guy, cause he is out there.
  11. Jess, I can make you those primaries all mandrel in one peice. All you would need to do is the collector. Like wise with virtually any other exhuast you do.
  12. what kind of qoutes did you get? I make exhuast all the time, mostly turbo systems but I do na exhuast sometimes. From the prices I know, I d say its a lot less expensive then a typical cat back.
  13. wow, wow.....wow, you mean if I get a non res ca red sticker there are riding restrictions so I could get fined anyways? I can t get a nv ohv sticker cause I bought my bikes private party? And WTF do sand rail people do? They dont come from a dealer, ussually small fabricators in many cases. Sounds like the best thing to do is get the NV sticker but how if you already own your bikes? I ve had mine for many many years.
  14. I know how that will sound. I ran basically the identical set up on my rear engine dragster about 8-9 years ago. I did a slip collector and tried several set ups though. Picture a 7000cc vw...thats what it sounds like. My 60 fts came down a tad but I lost mph basically. It was not as lound as two seperate headers. High rpm , like 6000-7000 sounded like a f1 car, but i was in front of it not on the side line. the lenght of the primaries are basically to long and bring in more low end power.
  15. I can store things for a few days at my place if you guys need to for some reason. I d consider long term but I need to get rid of a few things. Wow, on all things talked about. I never heard the must be paved stipulation before. Yes the clark county codes apply in Henderson and so do city regs if any.
  16. uh.....recently a street ls1 (383) made 1895 at the wheels. There is a local (vegas) viper that made alittle over 1500 as well. 1000 is an also ran , many supras, some lsx's, a lot of vipers...........
  17. First I fill nitrous....second I ve used on countless things, third Ive lost exactly one engine. It was a stock lt1 (93) that lived a long life and probably made 3000 passes at teh track. Looking back it detonated and broke a piston, actuallty just down to the ring land.It still ran just poorly. I ve sprayed a forged piston 383 (stock short rods and stock turned down 400 crank) so much its just sad. I ve probably lost 5 -7 head gaskets on it, but it had a 210 hp plate and a 250 hp fogger. The car ran mid /high tens on the plate. If the tune is right , nitrous isnt bad or more stressful to any dangerous point, but most people will not and do not tune it right or at all, just put in jets and go on someone elses word. I use a wide band o2 sensor, egt gauge (peak /hold) and scan tools/ dataloggers on anything with a computer. I even have a four channel egt to check for lean cylinders. The problem is that the tuning cost is way higher then the nitrous system, just in parts.
  18. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY WRONG..........The weight of any trailer is its gvw. I m sure the lady at the dmv is well versed in morning coffee and how long you can make people wait before they swear at you but the dmv , esspecially who you get at the window is not an expert in nv law. If you have a trailer that has a gvw of 10000 lbs, but weighs 4000 and you put nothing on it, you need a J endorsement to be legal. I pull a 50ft enclosed goose neck (GN) with a gvw of 15500, my truck has a gvw of 11000, so that puts me over 26k, wether I carry it or not. NV is great though, you can get a NON CDL class A, which is what I have. Most states do not offer such a license. As for insurance not covering you if you pull overweight, cause its illegal? Thats pretty much what insurance is for...............if that were the case, a speeder involved in an accident wouldnt be covered, a drunk driver wouldnt be covered, a red light runner wouldnt be covered, etc etc etc.... BTW the GCVW of a light duty truck doesnt really exist in the eyes of the law. The published towing ratings of light duty trucks are for sales and warantee coverage. In many states you simply pay for the weight rating you want , like if you pull 40k lbs of hay you license your dodge for 40k.....and go to town. Its your axle weights that matter alot more. I can easily go over the oem recommended gcvw but be under on the axle weights, and since I don t use or have a warantee I dont care. The NHP doesnt care unless m over on axle weights, or not licensed to pull the load. oh btw, my 50 ft trailer is under 10 unladen, who would know or care, there is no unladen weight, ofcourse the dmv in their wisdom put 1000 lbs on my registraion for a 50 ft trailer....yea it comes in at around 9000 empty. All that matter is the weight placue and the gvw number on it , thats what the hwp in any state will be looking at on a stop, they are not going to guess at what it weight empty.
  19. ford doesn t own cummins, they may own cummings so it sounds like they have a good engine waiting but not cummins. Its a very big myth that ford owns cummins. I think that around 10 years ago they had about 10% stock in cummins, but has since been sold and have no further ties to cummins.
  20. I ve never rolled...but I do have a good story. Recently one of my shops jobs was to repair a roll over. A 77 gmc jimmy. The owner rolled it up in redrock. I replaced the roof, the doors, fenders, and repaired the quarters. Now it has a pretty cool paint job, airbrushed sheet metal panals/revets, and flames coming down over the sheet metal. Im just finishing up the roll cage now, it will probably be done at the end of the week. some people love their trucks.
  21. yep thats me.....Jon actually.
  22. Went out to the midnight mayham event at LVMS last night. The track is horrible on mm cause of all the street tire cars and fwd etc... The density altitude was 4900 ft. I ran a 99 camaro, it has one of my turbo kits, a stock crank, stock rods, stock pistons, stock (not even ls6) intake, stock gm cam never apart ls1 with 70k miles. It runs a 3.00 rear gear and a 2800 stall. It went 11.24 @ 120 , it was its first time at the track on a very safe tune and lower boost. It has a bit left in it and will hopefully drop right into the 10's next weds. As far as I know it was the quickess car that drove in. ps, got an ls2 earlier in the night too......so that makes one ls2 and about 4 /5 ls1's in the shop.
  23. I hit a dog on a sprt bike at about 120mph. Funny thing is , the dog was on the race track......I cut the dog in half (mastif) and did a nice over the bars move/ hand stand at 115 or so.....went sliding for 400-500 ft or so and broke 5 bones. Had small problem on my banshee in the desert, I hate the desert.....I really hate the desert, did I say I hate the desert? Broke the helmet, got knocked out for a couple minutes, got a nice titanium cheek for it now. It looks cool , holds my cheek/eye/skull together. Due to ther life accidents I have a lower lumber fusion also, like the pics above but thats small scale, Ive got rods, plates and screws abit higher in the back. Scars.....you could see right through me during surgery.....about 8 inches , front and back. I love the sand cause its soft.....as long as I dont hit somebody else it isnt to bad. I did have my closest call ever just two weeks ago at sandhollow, with an idiot.....jumping with no vision or spotter, he almost got me bad.....
  24. I bought my quads private party ......and um it was years ago, around 1998? and then the raptor in probably late 03 or 04.......how do I get a nev ohv sticker for them? show a dealer the titles? and ask em.
