DSLR camera tips, techniques, photo sharing, etc

The second shot tipped me off that you were using a small apeture. The starbust effect in the lights. That sign is just brite. The best way to solve it is to take two shots from the identical position and overlay them. Expose for the sign on one, then expose for the rest on the other. I'll do it in camera using the overlay function. You could also do it in photoshop. If you use a filter, everything on the filters dark side won't look right. Be sure to use the same apeture for both so the depth of field is the same. Also, try around F11 so that the diffraction isn't as bad. You could also do three exposures. One for the hotel lights, that way everything is perfect. Also, do this about 10 - 20 minutes after the sunset, you will have an awesome blue sky. I've done this with about six shots to get things the way I like it. Remember the Christmas photo in the dunes? That was about five. All done in camera. sh*t, giving away secrets.

Would you mind keeping your posts in English? LOL!

Since the question of lighting a sign came up I thought you might like this. I'm thinking about entering a local contest and went out and did this about two months ago. The first is the original and the second is the edited for contest version. I went black and white and gritty to give it an old look to emphasise the historic road. I did a few with passing cars but liked this one better. This was taken about 20 minutes after sunset.

Yep. I couldn't use a speedlight on mine though (maybe if I tried it with an amber gel). I had to find a light that most closely resembled the color temp of the streetlight, otherwise I was cooling the temp of the sign down WAY too much. You'll notice that my white balance settings have turned the streetlights white (and cancelled the color pollution on the sky, giving it an accurate blue color you guys in the desert are used to seeing).

Here's one with Christmas lights that aren't yellow using the same technique (only moderate editing done to it, since it didn't fit the series I was working on):

I didn't use a speedlight. Just a maglite flashlight. My discipline on white balance lacks most of the time. Normally not a problem since I'm looking for a unique look but when it might be important for like the street sign, I cheat. I'll use an adjustment brush to change the temp locally if needed.

Nice shot BTW!

One of my Norway pilots did a strafing run on the range today and we grabbed some bullets. He wanted to send a photo home so I did a quick setup with some copy paper and used a little bounce flash to make the shot more presentable. These are 20mm bullets out of a rotary cannon in the wing root. Something different.

Thought I would bump this thread back up. I bought a ND (Neutral Density) filter off EBAY and went out to the beach at sunset to try it out. These are between 15 an 30 second exposures. The waves were about 3 feet also. This filter makes the water appear flat. Gonna play with this filter in different locations.

The filter is adjustable and takes a bit of getting use to but I like the results so far.

These were touched up a bit in lightroom also.

Those are nice. The first one is very similar to a framed photo I have in my house. Popular shot. I bought it at an art fair.

I figure this thread could use a :bump:

I took my mom up to Zion this last weekend for her birthday. It was a good opportunity to bust out the DSLR and grab a few shots of the place while I was there. The weather was awesome.

Another :bump: for the DSLR thread. Hard to believe I started this thread 7 years ago. My old 50D camera body is feeling and showing signs of age.

It was a cloudy night after the rain today in Vegas so I went out and grabbed a few shots around town.

Down at the south end of the strip near the runway...
