  1. Get the diesel! If you're gonna tow a toyhauler, get the six speed. If you wanna go fast stoplight to stoplight, get the automatic. You have a choice of rear end ratios. I want to see a Mega-cab Loooooooooong bed! :mischevious:
  2. I have a single sway system on mine. Wife got freaked on a windy day and had the trailer packed tail heavy. Needless to say, some moving around some toys to change the weight distribution and the sway controller has made a hell of a difference. Have never driven w/o the controller since. Keeps the wife happy! Don't forget about the tow vehicle as well!! A high load range tire (like E) has a stiff sidewall and can help control sway. Some of the "All-Terrain" tires found on lifted trucks have a weaker sidewall to make going over obstacles easier as the sidewall has more give. Weaker sidewalls can allow the tires to flex side to side in a minor sway situation and can cause the sway to get worse. (trailer life magazine had an article on this subject) With all the money you have spent on truck, trailer, & toys, anything you do to make the trip safer is money well spent BEFORE you have a problem. :mischevious:
  3. I did some research and Dumont is controlled by the Bureau of Land Management. There is plenty of info on the BLM site on Dumont. On the other hand, Pismo (Oceano) has minimal info on the BLM site. I have also read that Pismo is controlled by the California Dept. of Parks and Recreation. I would suspect the BLM is selective on the permits for goods/services provided at Dumont. If the BLM did issue a permit for a water/waste service, I would think the service would be very expensive. Coming out of Baker, Shoshone, or Pahrump is a relatively long drive compared to the couple miles at Pismo. And Pismo is year round while Dumont is seasonal. (I guess the die-hards go in the middle of summer) How screwed up would Dumont be if there were RV rentals, ATV & rail rentals, Bars, restaraunts, etc. within a couple miles of the dunes? It may be more cost effective to bring more water and a blue waste tank to get you by. JMO
  4. I store mine at a buddies 2 acres about 25 miles away. Had to buy a shltload of rock to cover the ground it sits on. But storage is free. My CC&Rs prohibit any rv parking in the driveway or on the property if it is taller than the fences.
  5. http://www.robbygordon.com/cgi-bin/Imagefo...Dunes&img=0 Some decent pics
  6. Speed Channel showed about 15 Secs of Biffle in his LT at dumont. Could not tell it was dumont. That puzzy Darrel Waltrip said he wouldn't get in a rail because it " looks dangerous"! What a wimp!
  7. I run 75w140 synthetic in my midengine vw powered toy. My trans builder says its ok. He prefers non-syn because the seals have a tendency to leak w/syn. I use it because i get the $25 a quart stuff Gratis! Have had no leaks! I don't think anyone has had a trans fail due to bad fluid. Maybe lack-of. Run what your trans builder recommends. As long as he knows what it is used for and the HP going into it.
  8. I am not as close to dumont as most of the DDR. I hang out here to keep the dunin' fire going while my toys sit in the garage waiting for the next trip south. I am looking forward to the next trip, knowing there will be some cool people to hook up with. :ban-cha:
  9. Dumont is the place for me. Dune drivin' is the life for me. Sand spreadin' out so far and wide Keep the asphalt, just give me that comp hillside. Home on big weekends is where I'd rather stay. I'll never go on president's day I just adore an open campground view. Big weekends I love you but give me smooth-azz dunes ...The dunes ...The loons ...No punks. ...The drunks So says my wife. Good bye, big weekend life. offweekends we are there.
  10. http://www.georgehporterco.com/main.htm This is the Buggy Whip website. Have all sorts of whip lengths.
  11. http://cgi.ebay.com/toyhauler-rv-camp-mark...1QQcmdZViewItem Have hours to kill? Like your flag more than riding? Then this is for you!
  12. I do not want to see dumpsters at Dumont. I have taken my trash and full grey/black tanks all the way home. (400+ miles) The trash bags just take up the room where the fire wood was. Who cares about the weight. Its the same as when I got there. Less gas and wood. I bet 99.9% of the people who have responded to this question are hard working (or not), tax paying, responsible (most of the time), adults. As are the majority of folks that enjoy what Dumont has to offer. I doubt that there will be any responses from those irresponsible losers who just don't Give a $hlt. I will also bet that the majority of the people who leave thier trash, junk, bottles, etc. are those of the Gen-X age. Get a group of young adults, add alcohol, fireworks, and HP, even the most responsible in the group will likely say eff-it when it comes to cleaning up before leaving. JUST MY OPINION. I apologize to anyone in this group that this does not apply. I was younger and stupider and have been there, done that. Now I go there, do that, and leave no evidence plus take more evidence. Sure, there are the adults older than some of us that just don't get it. Education may help, but not likely. There will always be bad apples. Some will recover, some won't. PACK IT IN, PACK MORE OUT!
  13. I suppose you could get a 50' gooseneck enclosed trailer, add a couple slides, cut some holes for windows, put in all the comforts of home. Still think it would end up being one heavy SOB. But if you have a Dodge to tow it with, then there should be no issues!
  14. Might as well get a used nextel cup tractor trailer. Huge sleeper on the tractor. Have the two slides custom made into the trailer. :mc_smiley: Or you could always tow around a customized single wide! j/k.
  15. These are our 2 Golden Dumtrievers. Bruiser & Bailey. AKA Dorks and Tards. GODSPEED TO ALL THOSE LOST PETS. I HAVE SEEN ONE DOG RUN THROUGH OUR CAMP AND HAVE HAD TWO MORE DUNERS COME BY LOOKING FOR THEIR DOGS. KEEP YOUR PETS SECURE!
  16. I have checked the sensor accuracy by using a hose and timing how long it takes to fill a gallon container. then put the hose in the toilet or tub and time how long it takes for each sensor to come on. good idea to shut water off at each light to let the turbulence settle. You can gauge how much room you have left. I did this with the fresh water tank and found out it was 120 gals not the listed 100 gals. When my fresh water sensor indicates 1/3 left, it has 60 gallons. We also use water like it costs $5 a gallon! conserve,
  17. 450r? No Problem! We had no issues with a kfx700, a trx400, a honda 80 2 wheeler. ther is alot more shifting and braking. I aired the tires up to max and adjusted them when we got on the trail. 4-5 lbs should be fine. Dirt tires for sure! unless you want to destroy your paddles. There are a few water crossings but should not be more than a tires depth.
  18. If the sign is accurate, It would be about 30 miles round trip from camp to the mine and back. I figure we went between 10-15 mph. stops to drink, p, and photograph. Did not worry about fuel. Forgot to mention, It can get real dusty on the trail. Can't see the guy infront of you Dusty! I wore a bandana to keep from breathing dust. Dirt tires can and will pick up rocks and throw them in any direction, including you. As my wife and her quad can attest to, the trail is alot harder to land on than the sand! Boy I wish I was goin'!
  19. If you hike or ride a horse you can get to China. No atvs. I think the mileage is "as the crow flies" Here are a couple pics from the trail. The junk cars are actually kinda cool. All the trash in the area is all old stuff. Soda/beer cans that had pop tops or needed a church key to open. Kinda cool showing a 15 year old in our group all the "old" stuff. Very little "new" trash. This is a couple miles toward the talc mine from the sign. The other pic is the trail looking back towards DD. Take your time and look around as you go. Lots of stuff to see and trails. Be careful as there are narrow areas and rocks that can jar the handle bars out of your hands. Bring h20 and snacks. If you go to the mine, figure on 3-4 hours depending if you sightsee or race.
  20. Due to family health issues, We had to cancel our trip to DD. Plan on being there in march Everyone have a blast!
  21. Will be there 9th to 16th. Should be able to find the DDR camp(s)! :fart: The sperry wash is a fun ride! Went all the way to the talc mine. Be careful of the rocks and washed out roads along the way.
  22. Looks like a new fender! Hope the tires aren't Carlisles But 80 mph towing several thousand $$$$ in toys? :fart:
  23. Most everyone has added or improved their TH to make loading, storing, securing, towing, easier and safer. What have you done to make life easier? What would you like to make better? There are alot of good ideas out there! :monkeedance2: I put pins in the drop down bed tracks when it is up. I have had the clips break and the bed drop while towing. Want a to store tie-downs (20) w/o tangling up. use a bucket for the present.
