  2. Man, it's been a rough day. Just one of many to come too. Things are not going to be the same without Bert around. He is pretty much the reason I got addicted to duning. I feel like it's the end of an era.

  4. I only knew Bert for a few years, but he offered his help, advice, and friendship from the very first time I met him as if we had been friends forever. He had a huge heart and was so caring which is rare to see. Bert helped me more times than I can count. He has towed me when I was broke, lent a hand, tools, advice or whatever I needed. And he helped me learn the dunes and was there when I was new and lost the line or had an issue. There were times when I didn't even know he was near, but I look up and there is Bert to help out. He was like a big brother, always watching over the dunes and everyone. We were just starting to talk about kids and introducing them to the dunes now that I am a new dad. He had a lot of great advice and I truly looked up to him as a person, father, friend and Duner. I always looked forward to seeing and talking to Bert and for many more dune trips, talks and experiences. It is so sad, we had to lose him so soon and it will never be the same, not seeing him rolling through the dunes.

  7. Bert's family requests privacy for the next 24 hours. But his wife does also request that we spread the word because he was loved by so many. Rest in peace Little bro.

  8. When I joined this site and met Bert at Dumont the first time and found out his real name I told him I knew his father (who also was taken to soon). Bert and I had lot's of conversations about the time he and his dad spent at the dunes. He always said his dad was taken to soon and worried about it himself. Unfortunately he was right. Bert was a kind gentle soul and a friend to anyone and I for one am truly sorry that such a great person has left us. I keep Ashley and the kids in my thoughts and hope and know that his large extended family will be there to help. I am truly at a loss. Terry

  12. I met Bert the first time in person when he pulled up to tow me back to camp after my son and I were hit by another rail. It was as if he knew me already and no big deal, that's what we do. The thing is we hear that all the time but Bert lived it. I have seen him cut a ride short to go rescue someone in the dunes. I also always respected how he would fly the US flag high and proud and would light it up all night. I didn't know him as well as most here but enough to know we all lost someone special. We should name a hill or bowl after him.
