what are we paying for

:shoot: Thanks Pete. I see once again you are fighting the good fight.

As far as i know glamis didnt raise their fee's maybe i'll have to check out those dunes.

You're right. Dumont sucks because of fees. Go to Glamis. Have fun. We'll just have to deal with Dumont. post-475-1200412023_thumb.gif

The agenda items for the fee increase and how last years funds were spent has passed some time ago. Therefore:

The time to complain about how the money was spent last year has passed.

The time to complain about the fee increase has also passed.

There were plenty of opportunities to be heard. The time was set aside to deal with these issues. They were dealt with, and now it's time to move forward. It's funny that the complaints sky rocketed once it hit the wallet. Asleep at the wheel? Perhaps.

If you want to complain the public forum that the BLM offers (TRT meetings) is the correct place to do just that. Exercise your right to complain and show up to the next meeting. Get the explanation directly from the BLM yourselves. No need to beat this dead horse on DDR over and over. There are new issues to face. Another fight is upon us like the lizards. Every meeting has a publicized agenda, so you know what the topics are ahead of time. There is no conspiracy here by the BLM to spend ooodles of our money frivolously. After going to a meeting I am convinced they are trying their best to be a good custodian with Dumont.....with our input, which they wouldn't get very much of if it wasn't for folks like Terry, Vicki and others that serve or just attend as "public". I hear so many folks that are concerned, but don't seem willing to stand up where it counts.......at the meetings. When we mention attending the meetings....it's becomes a lynch mob at times. :laughoff:

Funny.....the folks defending the process and BLM are the ones that actually got involved and went to "check out" what goes on in the meetings.

OH MY GOSH, IT'S A DIRT ROAD!!!!! What part of this aren't these people understanding?? :rainbow1: They think this is bad, try going down Bessemer (sp?) Mine Road in Johnson Valley. That beats the poop out of you.

Do you really think Dumont brings in enough money on "holiday weekends only" to pay for all of this stuff? Can you imagine how many people sneak in & out of Dumont without paying? How fair is that? How much do you think each of the Rangers, BLM, Sheriff's, CHP, Medical staff, etc get paid? I am guessing quite well. How much do you think it costs to lug that big grader thing out to the middle of no where, gas to get it there, gas to run it all weekend, pay for the driver, etc?? And for that matter how about the water truck??

Think about this..... How much would we have to pay you to drive to the middle of no where, away from your family & friends, work basically 24/7 for 3-4 days with little to no sleep, sharing a trailer with 2,3,4 or so other people, put up with a bunch of drunk, stupid & immature people, constantly making sure people are safe and for the most part just all around babysitting??? What would you expect to get paid?? And no, the riding you would have to do would not be for fun, it would be work.

i personally think the fee's are a bit expensive. for those of you in 100,000$ sand rails with 40+ foot toy haulers and semi trucks pulling them, maybe it seems cheap. but for people like me who sleep in their truck, the fee's can add up quickly. and i completely understand why people want to see where there money is going. i agree that it is a fair thing to ask. and i understand the whole 'if you cant pay for it then dont come' philosophy. but i suppose you just have to look a little bit out side of the box into things like pit toilets and stuff like that. but even then, i think alot of that money is pissed away and not used towards the bettering of the dunes and dune related facilities. on that subject comes the road leading in. i can not understand how you guys with big a$$ trucks and haulers and all this nice stuff could care less about taking it on a really messed up road when seemingly, for the pay of a blm person at around 10$ an hour, it could be grated weekly. thats approximately 50$ a week, assuming the person takes 5 hours to do it. thats almost payed for by ONE visitor on a holiday weekend. my numbers could be very wrong, but theres no way that is an unreasonable thing for people to ask for...

Here we go again. :beercheers::beercheers:

Didn't you just get on someone in the other post about not reading the entire post? Did you read everything in this thread yet?

Every single time this year I have gone to Dumont the road HAS been grated. The BLM has done an excellent job of keeping the road smooth.

The fees have been discussed numerous times and how the fee money is spent. This includes a complete break down of where the money goes to and how much everything costs. As a duner you won't SEE any changes or things improved. Lets remember something here. These new fees are not to improve anything. They are to make up for lost funding that was lost to pay for the things that we already have.

It costs alot more money than you think to pump and maintain the pit toilets (including removing grafitti), staffing and transportation of EMT's and BLM employees on weekends that they are there, maintenance to the area such as installing new closure stakes that are ripped out of the ground by duners who continue to remove them, etc etc.

It doesn't make a difference what everyone thinks of the road. Some don't care, some are gonna b*tch about it. Either way it doesn't change the fact that that road will never be paved. To quote the BLM maintence (I think his name is Mike Trost) "It is a DIRT road, plain and simple. There are no plans to PAVE it."

Even if you don't have an expensive rail, truck or hauler I would think you would still pay the fee no matter what because Dumont is such a great place.

I think I've discovered the problem here. It's all lost in the translation.

CHEESE is grated. ROADS are graded. NERVES are grated, which is what's happening to Pete.

Some folks want the road grated, which is the condition most think it's in anyway. Others want it graded so it will be smooth.

Cain't we all just get along???

Yeah I think so too. I mean wtf, we pay like 40 bucks for a holiday weekend. Come on now. I think we should have some sort of road side assistance program for the terrible conditions we have to face entering this extreme-terrain on the entrance road. What if we get a flat? Is there a Discount Tire at Dumont? What if we have to call a tow truck? Is there a nearby mall or casino where we can kill some time while we wait for help? And what will we do for lunch? Oh my gawsh, is there a Subway in the area? What if we ned a pedicure too? COME ON! :flipoff::laughing:

BTW, in case anyone was wondering, this past weekend the road was in such GREAT shape it was difficult to keep the speed down at 25mph, as posted. I peeked at the speedo, Davey was doin' 30, :flipoff: I think he was a lit'l excited to be there. post-1889-1201765198_thumb.gif

By definition the road is graded....and as the BLM guy said that's all it'll ever be. Paving costs outta this world.....imagine the complaining we'd get if we had to fund that.

A Graded road is often the first standard road infrastructure that is developed in areas of sandy or rocky countries. Initially either a bulldozer (for rocky areas) or plough (sandy areas) is deployed to drive a road bed surface along the available route. This route may be significantly influenced by the terrain in hilly areas and is often single track.

In a sandy environment the plough will create a windrow or pile of material at each side of the road. This windrow delineates the road from desert. After substantial use or after heavy rain the surface may become rutted or eroded and it is a frequent necessity for a plough to re-grade the surface.

All this talk about grading make me want a quesadilla.....Mmmmm. Definately gotta add a good messican food place there while your putting in that Subway and bratwurst stand.

:dunno: Silly me, here I thought we were discussing the "grated" road into Dumont. My bad. :DDRrocks:

A day spa would be nice, always chip at least one fingernail while camping......oh, and a massage after a long day of duning would always be a nice addition!! :DDRrocks:
